The Animal Ethics and Compliance Supervisor (AECS) reports to the Program Manager, and manages key aspects of the University’s Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) which includes the functioning of the University Animal Care Committee (UACC) and Local Animal Care Committees (LACCs). The AECS advises on the interpretation and implementation of university, sponsor and regulatory agency policies with respect to ethical conduct in animal research. The AECS manages all areas of the ethics review process for animal research; this includes directly supervising three unionized staff-appointed positions, overseeing administrative processes to identify areas of concern and proposing solutions, and participating on all ACCs as a full ex-officio member.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- Preparing for and attending all ACC meetings, participating in discussions regarding protocols being reviewed, taking minutes, and synthesizing the protocol discussions into review comments to be communicated to researchers.
- Acting as an advisor to researchers and ACC members on research ethics issues, policies and best practices.
- Resolving complex and/or high-risk issues during ethics review, working with the Program Manager and liaising with other units within the Research Oversight and Compliance Office (ROCO) and VP, Research and Innovation where required (e.g., Research Services Office).
- Administers matters relating to the ACUP and determines when issues must be escalated to the Program Manager, University Veterinarian and/or the UACC or LACC Chairs for further discussion or action.
- Proposes, develops and implements guidelines, best practices and procedures to be used by the ACCs, academic administrators, researchers, students and their faculty supervisors, in accordance with University, federal and international policies and legislation and sits as full ex-officio member on the University Animal Care Committee (UACC), subcommittees and working groups, as needed.
- Manages the comprehensive Quality Assurance Visit portion of our Post-Approval Review (PAR) program through supervision of Quality Assurance Analyst(s) and reporting activities to the UACC and making recommendations for program changes.
- Prepares regulatory reports to provincial and federal government and accreditation agencies, provides leadership in the preparation for the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) assessment visits and organizes activities in collaboration with the various facilities, and participates in the formulation of institutional responses and ensures the collection of facility responses to CCAC recommendations.
- Prepares and delivers communication and outreach activitieswith various constituents inside and outside the ACUP and University, and maintains listservs as needed to disseminate critical information to various constituencies.Provides functional leadership for the updating and ongoing use of an institutional-widesoftware platform integrating protocol submission, management, review and approval (My Research Animal Protocols, MRAP) and works in close collaboration with the IT team to ensure smooth and timely implementation of changes to the software platform.

**Essential Qualifications**:

- Master’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Four (4) years' of relevant experience in animal research in an academicsetting.
- Experience in animal ethics and compliance activities within an animal care and use program (e.g., Animal Care Committee administration, post-approval review, addressing noncompliance).
- Understanding of national (CCAC) and provincial (OMAFRA) policies and guidelines on animal care required.
- Proven ability to liaise, build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to compile and analyze data, prepare reports and other informational materials.
- Demonstrated ability to handle conflicting and multiple priorities, superior organizational and time management skills.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills and highly attentive to detail.
- Exceptionalcommunication (oral and written) skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate on initiatives with a wide variety of contacts both internal and external to the University.
- Advanced computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
