Job Summary

The Officer, Fire Prevention is responsible for reviewing, investigating and managing the portfolio of fire suppression claims. The role is accountable for providing additional support services to the internal stakeholders and community as well as technical outreach to internal and external stakeholders in staying ahead of fire risk management. The incumbent investigates fire claims which require a forensic investigation and the quantum of such claims. Furthermore, the role assists the General Claims team in periods of high demand or in providing technical expertise to the Operations function in emergency scenarios.

Main Responsibilities
- Investigate the origin, cause, and circumstances of fires, and prepare all related documents
- Analyze the root cause of the fires and suggest pro-active risk management measures to reduce the risk of fires on CN property causing damages to third parties as well as the financial impact of the fires
- Monitor the provincial wildfire maps and internal reports of fires during fire season, in view of reporting to the company on wildfire and claim risks
- Promote CN as a partner in fire prevention and improve relationships with external stakeholders
- Investigate and report on risks and claims resulting from accidents and incidents involving injuries, fatalities or property damage to the Company or third parties
- Review expert reports on wildfires by provincial and municipal bodies and make recommendations to the company’s solicitor on the technical aspects of handling wildfire litigation
- Negotiate with third parties, insurance companies, independent adjusters, and outside counsel on the settlement of claims or recommend disposition of claims
- Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures and keeps apprised of legislation changes, case law and adjusting and insurance trends dealing with fires
- Keep apprised of changes in railway operations, procedure, and policy
- Liaise with insurers and their representatives, in cases where the Company may be liable for damage caused, and for which insurance coverage may be available
- Help internal stakeholders with the mitigation of fire risks by providing recommendations on wildfire plans, vegetation management plans and other tools to prevent or fight wildfires

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role is required to be on-call 24/7 to deal with critical incidents. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, deal with pressure and stress due to dealing with fatalities, serious injuries, extensive property damage and operating in an adversarial environment. The role requires mínimal travel (10%) within Canada.

**Requirements**:
Experience

Claims Adjusting
- Between 5 to 10 years of experience in claims adjusting specific to wildfires or in fire forensic investigation

Education/Certification/Designation
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
- Trained in firefighting with a specific focus on wildfire forensic investigation and cost analysis of major fires involving third party property damage or suppression costs
- Valid Driver’s License
- Certification as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist (CWMS) from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)*
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
