Harm Reduction Educator

**OVERVIEW**:
The Harm Reduction Educator delivers a culturally appropriate education and awareness campaign focused on reducing the harm associated with substance use and assists in administering a granting program for southern First Nations to support land-based substance addictions recovery.
Reporting to the Senior Harm Reduction Program Specialist, the Harm Reduction Educator will assist in the coordination, training, and continued evaluation of key activities related to the program.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Assist the Senior Program Specialist in the delivery of Harm Reduction Awareness foundational principles.
- Provide education and promote awareness on Harm Reduction as a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use.
- Participate in Harm Reduction activities that advocate movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs.
- Assist in organizing peer groups to provide input on an effective Harm Reduction Awareness campaign.
- Assist the Senior Program Specialist to establish partnerships with multiple stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate the progress of the program.
- Assist in the development of a culturally appropriate education and informational campaign to increase awareness of harm reduction strategies and reduce the stigmas associated with substance use in southern First Nation communities.
- Provide context and support development of social media campaigns focused on reducing overdose events and increasing awareness of harm reduction strategies on International Harm Reduction Day (May 7) and International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31).
- Use substantial knowledge of drug use, overdose prevention, and harm reduction to design and deliver workshops and presentations in southern First Nation schools, health forums, and other settings on and off reserve.
- Provide support to the Senior Program Specialist to catalogue substance recovery programs and services available for those seeking support including traditional Anishinaabe and Dakota healing and wellness community, regional, and provincial initiatives.
- Provide assistance alongside the Communications Department to develop educational and outreach campaign materials for the Harm Reduction Awareness program.
- Collaborate and professionally represent SCO while working with external partners.
- Develop trusted relationships with community health teams, wellness service providers, and community members.
- Maintain records of program materials and activities.
- Monitor on-going work and make recommendations to the Program Team Lead for continuous improvement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
**EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Undergraduate degree in Health Sciences, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Nursing, Indigenous Studies, or a related field/discipline is required.
- Minimum of three years of experience in addiction treatment, harm reduction, program coordination, and facilitation.
- Knowledge of the impacts of colonization, Indian Residential and Day Schools, the 60’s Scoop, MMIWG2S+, the Child Welfare System, and intergenerational trauma.
- Appreciation of the significance of Anishinaabe and Dakota ancestral teachings, language, songs, and ceremonies in promoting health and wellness.
- Experience delivering workshops and public presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
- Sound knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, anti-stigma practices, and Harm Reduction Foundational Principles.
- Ability to prepare and deliver high quality reports for diverse audiences with the ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and respectfully.
- Demonstrated program coordination, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to problem solve and think critically with strong attention to detail.
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must be skilled in working with internet browsers, Windows, and Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must be able to work independently, as well as with a team, and be able to prioritize and adapt within a fast-paced changing environment.
**OTHER REQUIREMENTS**:
- Must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check (with vulnerable sector check) and current and clear Child Abuse Registry and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.
- A valid class 5 MB driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for business travel
- Available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Occasional overnight travel may be required.
