**Position Overview**

The Peace Wapiti Indigenous Education Initiative is a multi-institutional partnership that is focused on supporting the Peace Wapiti Public School Division's intentions to support the success of First Nations, Metis and Inuit students, and all other students, through district and community-driven initiatives. The primary emphasis is to engage with schools and Indigenous communities to better understand specific needs and challenges that may hinder student learning and to support those that are making a positive difference in the lives of learners. Our methodology aligns with Indigenous methodologies that start from the community, and are responsive to the voices of the community, in developing a recommended research action plan.

The team will be led by a Werklund School scholar who holds extensive research experience working with Indigenous communities and schools and is further informed by a pilot delivery of the project undertaken in.

This initiative will be further supported by a team of Indigenous scholars and knowledge-keepers who hold expertise in Indigenous education and the local area. The successful applicant will be responsible for working with stakeholders on the overall design and maintaining the research scope, budget, and timelines thereby supporting adherence to the program objectives. The broader view of the initiative is to contribute to research-based knowledge in ways that meaningfully support effective teaching, learning and leadership for First Nation, Métis and Inuit students. Partners in the Peace Wapiti Indigenous Education Initiative include First Nations and Métis communities, local school district leadership, knowledge-keepers, and University of Calgary team of researchers.

The Research Associate will work with partners in the Peace Wapiti Indigenous Education Initiative to coordinate the various activities of the research team. Under the guidance of the Research Lead, the incumbent will pursue team-based and independent research activities under the supervision and direction of the Research Lead. The position is expected to contribute towards the publication of research findings in well-regarded journals. The incumbent will work remotely however must be available to advise on, assist in, and coordinate a variety of research activities.

**Position Description**

**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Research:

- Participate in data collection, analysis, co-authoring of research reports
- Support coordination of research trips, bookings, and events
- Pursue independent research activities in addition to team-based activities providing guidance and coaching to the research team where appropriate
- Support the research team in the publication of research findings in well-regarded journals
- Assist with drafting conference and manuscript documents
- Pursue independent research activities in addition to team-based activities providing guidance and coaching to the research

Knowledge Dissemination:

- Support the Research Lead by presenting and co-presenting research findings at scholarly conferences and other professional meetings (some travel may be required)
- Attend and participate in training opportunities aligned with research interest and career direction
- Development of events and activities that relate to the research project for use in the initiative

**Qualifications / Requirements**:

- Previous degrees with a focus on Indigenous peoples in social science (anthropology, sociology) or in education is considered an asset
- Minimum 2 years' experience working with Indigenous community needs and priorities
- Strong record of scholarship, and/or focus in the area of community and kinship
- Demonstrated engagement with Indigenous methods and theories
- A record of engagement with, or connections to, Indigenous communities, organizations and/or institutions is required.
- Excellent communication and writing skills with the proven ability to work co-operatively in a
- research team
- Previous knowledge and work within a university setting is required
- Experience in crafting ethics submissions is an asset
