**Position Summary**

**Surgical Clinical Reviewer, Program Mgmt-Surgery**
North York General Hospital is a participant of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP).
NSQIP is a program that provides hospitals with a surgical quality improvement program that has facilitated the delivery of better outcomes, shortened patient hospital-stays, and fewer surgical complications per year.
The Surgical Clinical Reviewer at North York General Hospital is responsible for collecting and submitting reliable data to the ACS NSQIP by compiling, documenting, and entering high-quality data for all eligible surgeries. The role involves working closely with the Department of Surgery to identify clinical quality improvement opportunities and manage special projects. The reviewer must plan and coordinate data collection with the Surgical Program team, build strong relationships with peers, and connect effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and families. Key skills include effective organization, problem-solving, time management, and leadership in coordinating research studies. Additionally, the position supports the hospital's academic mission through teaching, learning, research, and innovation, while ensuring adherence to health and safety policies for a healthy environment for all stakeholders.

- ** Data Collection and Reporting**:

- Collects preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the Program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems.
- Attends division meetings as required to report on data collection of postoperative occurrences.
- Demonstrates applicability of the methodology and the reliability of definitions utilized by reviewers within the program through Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) testing.
- Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process.
- Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the Program.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into the program’s database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
- Reviews weekly site accrual report on the database and responds to accrual report alerts.
- Executes study-related administrative tasks such as collection of regulatory documents, data entry, ethics submissions, serious adverse event submissions, etc.
- Plans, implements and coordinates all aspects of data collection, and source documentation, as per North York General Hospital policy.
- Conducts chart reviews.
- Assesses study-related literature.
- Participates in database maintenance including data entry.
- **Works Effectively with Patients, Families, and Staffs Effectively with patients, Families, and Staff.**:

- Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records and the Information Systems Departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the Program.
- Contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital.
- Serves as a resource on the ACS NSQIP for internal and external audiences by developing material and delivering presentations.
- Identifies problems, reports them to senior team members, and assists in developing plans to resolve them.

ACS NSQIP and Ontario (NSQIP-ON) Participation**:

- Successfully completes the ACS NSQIP SCR Training/Certification Program within first 3 months.
- Successfully completes ACS NSQIP annual competency exam.
- Participates in Program teleconferences.
- Attends ACS NSQIP National Conference.
- Shares NSQIP data and quality improvement lessons and solutions with the NSQIP-ON Collaborative participants.
- Engages in collaborative learning with a network of colleagues across the province (NSQIP-ON Collaborative).
