The Restorative Care Support is responsible for the implementation, evaluation and revision of restorative nursing programs under the direct supervision of the Director of Care, and RAI Coordinator.

Restorative nursing care refers to interventions which promote the resident’s ability to living as independently as possible. The program objectives focus on rehabilitation or maintenance of physical function which supports optimal mental health and wellbeing. Interventions are related to skill development to promote the resident’s maximum functional ability.

Restorative care is a requirement under the Fixing Long Term Care Homes Act.

**Key Duties & Responsibilities**

Assess every resident within 24-hours of admission, quarterly/annually and with significant change assessment, to determine functional ability and willingness to participate in a restorative program.

Evaluate resident progress in restorative programs on a quarterly basis in collaboration with the RAI Coordinator according to the MDS schedule.

Review the resident’s care plan to ensure goals and interventions are appropriate for the resident and revise as needed. Conduct resident evaluations through observation of technique or interviews with the resident or staff.

Document in the resident progress notes all assessment and evaluation findings.

Report to supervising RAI Coordinator for final review and sign off.

**Qualifications/Competencies**

Diploma in health related field involving studies such as anatomy and physiology, rehabilitative/restorative techniques and therapies, communication disorders, activation and promotion of mental health and wellbeing including interpersonal skill and therapeutic relationships.

**Knowledge, Skill & Ability**
- Basic structure and function of the human body from a systems perspective
- Safely inspect, palpate and move structures of the body
- Understand the philosophical, professional and ethical concepts of rehabilitation/restoration
- Safely handle, position and transfer residents
- Establish effective relationships with residents, families and other healthcare providers
- Awareness of common health conditions including pathology, etiology, prevalence, clinical signs and symptoms which may restrict or limit participation
- Understand common feeding and swallowing disorders and strategies to assist with feeding and swallowing
- College level writing, research and documentation to produce clear, informed and purposeful documentation for the resident’s health record
