**The opportunity**:
The Assistant Manager, General Services, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the General Services area. This involves supervision of all staff, planning, scheduling and coordinating their work to carry out repairs, maintenance and renovations of the landscape, facilities and equipment at the Fort Garry campus and elsewhere as required. Estimating materials, procurement, working closely with many University departments, conducting performance evaluations, hiring casual staff, assisting with hiring of full-time staff, carrying out disciplinary procedures and being on call at all times in order to resolve emergencies are essential to the efficient operation of the area. The Assistant Manager assumes the responsibilities of the Manager in his/her absence in consultation with the Director of Physical Plant.

**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:

- A University degree in a related discipline such as Landscape Architecture or Agriculture required.
- Training in horticulture, arboriculture or grounds maintenance would be an asset.
- A technical college diploma in a related discipline may be considered.
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certificate or a Manitoba Arborists Certificate preferred.
- Possess a Class 5 driver's license
- Minimum three years of directly related business and/or operations experience including supervisory experience required.
- Thorough knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures, landscaping, horticultural and arboriculture practices, good knowledge of related vehicles and equipment is required.
- Acceptable experience in a multi-tasking environment.
- Experience in a unionized environment.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, particularly using spreadsheets, word processing and database software required.
- Must be able to problem solve.
- Must have strong leadership skills.
- Must have strong training skills.
- Willingness to learn and take upgrading courses required.
- Strong mechanical aptitude required.
- Demonstrated strong mentoring and leadership skills are essential.
- Demonstrate abilities in operational planning, preparing estimates, preparing reports, organizing, directing, and coordinating a large staff and budget required.
- Ability to understand and review plans and specifications is required.
- Ability to write vehicle and equipment specifications required.
- Must have the ability to make independent decisions along with excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- Experience working in automotive and/or heavy equipment environment preferred.
- Grounds management experience.
- Specification writing experience.
