Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the Lead Advisor, Sustainability is responsible to identify, define and deploy VIA Rail's initiatives and strategies in terms of social responsibility and sustainable mobility.

This is a temporary role - 18 months.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
- Contribute to the development of the global strategy and determine the company’s short
- and medium-term objectives, as well as the company’s CSR end goals;
- Identify key indicators to measure progress and set up processes to monitor these indicators;
- Define VIA Rail’s CSR strategy, taking into account:
1. the needs and obligations of the various departments (operations, maintenance, the management of assets, human resources, production, marketing, safety, quality, etc.);
2. legal and regulatory requirements and recognized standards, as well as those of the United Nations;
- Advise the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors on sustainable development strategy and issues, and report to the Board on the evolution of sustainable development goals;
- Act as a consultant for VIA Rail’s department management to strengthen the integration of the sustainable development plan and ESG issues into their practices, processes and operations;
- Support all communications and government relations focused on sustainable development and showcase CSR success stories and best practices;
- Ensure Lead the design, development and publication of compliance reports and annual reporting (including VIA Rail internal and external channels);
- Coordinate VIA Rail’s program for the recognition and integration of Indigenous Peoples;
- Support the development and deployment of VIA Rail’s community involvement strategy.

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
- Develop the sustainable mobility master plan in line with VIA Rail Canada’s strategic plan;
- Deploy VIA’s 360° strategy for sustainable development (environment, society, economics, culture);
- Implement major, interdepartmental programs such as decarbonization plan and climate resilience plan;
- Develop a sustainability plan and approach in major VIA Rail projects
- Evaluate the gaps and/or shortcomings, the possible progress of VIA Rail’s activity to better respond to environmental, ethical and social imperatives;
- Represent VIA Rail in trade associations and work groups such as the Railway Association of Canada, the International Union of Railways and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce;
- Representing the company before government groups such as the Federal Crown’s Greening Government Strategy Practice Committee;
- Monitor national and international regulations, as well as best practices and directions in sustainable development.
Requirements:

University degree in administration, communications, management or any other combination of relevant education;
Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in corporate social responsibility;
Knowledge of sustainable mobility and passenger transportation is a major asset;
Flexibility to travel across Canada.

Competencies:

- Proficiency in information technology (Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, SharePoint);
- Excellent communication skills in English and French (written and oral);
- Excellent judgment and strong analytical, interpersonal, communication, negotiation and presentation skills;
- Self-directed and willing to take initiative, issue recommendations and make decisions;
- Sense of partnership and team spirit;
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple simultaneous demands, set priorities, manage stress and allocate time effectively to meet strict deadlines;
- Professional, self-sufficient, customer-focused and results-oriented.
