**MANAGER, EDUCATION & PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR DALHOUSIE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE**
**DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE**
The Department of Medicine(DoM) is comprised of 15 Medical Divisions, including: Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, Palliative Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Respirology and Rheumatology.
The Department includes more than 200 academic medical faculty (physicians).
**DESCRIPTION OF INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM**
The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program is the study of adult medicine. Training leads to a consultant physician who functions either as a General Internist or a sub-specialist in one of the related fields as noted above. The program is designed to meet the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The training program consists of three years of core Internal Medicine residency, including: 12 months of training in General Internal Medicine; significant exposure to Critical Care (ICU and CCU) and Cardiology; exposure to other subspecialties. A fourth year (PGY4) of specialized training is necessary to fulfil the requirements to become a General Internist. Alternatively, a resident may opt for sub-specialty training in one of the above areas, necessitating an additional 2 - 3 years of training.
The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program includes residents between two Training Sites: Halifax, NS and Saint John, NB (years 1 - 4 approximately -50-60 based in Halifax and an additional 8-10 based in Saint John “core residents”); residents from other postgraduate medical programs who require Internal Medicine rotations as part of their academic program; and “subspecialty medicine residents” (approximately 60-100 residents).
For trainees based in Halifax the majority of training takes place at the QEII campus, residents also receive training at a number of other locations including Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John New Brunswick, regional and community hospitals and community practices throughout the Maritime Provinces. The Saint John campus is a major affiliate of the core Internal Medicine Training Program. In 2007, it became the primary site for training Core IM residents, who are enrolled within the Dalhousie University training program. There is a requirement for the incumbent to liaise directly with physicians and program officials from Saint John (as well as other training sites).
DESCRIPTION OF INTERNAL MEDICINE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
The Undergraduate Program involves approximately 100 medical students per class in each of four years. Students complete various units in Med 1 and 2 and various rotations in Med 3 which are staffed by members of the Department of Medicine. Each student participates in Med 1 tutorials, Med 2 clinical skills sessions, and Med 3 core rotations; the department also offers Med 4 electives tutored and supervised by DoM physicians which are offered to Dalhousie students and students from other medical schools in Canada and around the world. Over 2700 hours annually of faculty time is scheduled to provide tutors, lecturers and examiners for the undergraduate program. In addition, Department members supervise approximately 300 Med 4 electives each year.
**MANAGER ROLE**
The Manager, Education is responsible to provide oversight and comprehensive coordination and administrative support for the Education Office. The Manager’s work is directed by the DoM Postgraduate and Undergraduate Program Directors and the Continuing Professional Development(CPD) Chair. (S)he is a key contact for Education issues within the DoM and represents the Education Office to various internal and external stakeholders with the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Program Directors.
