**Position Summary**: Under the direction of the Compost Manager/Supervisor, this position will be responsible for finished compost sampling, performing physical and chemical testing of bulk density leaf and yard waste, some lab reporting and water sampling of monitoring wells around the Niagara Campus. The QA/QC technician will also perform quality assurance and control duties, while ensuring that all work is in compliance with applicable environmental regulations and Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs).

**Major **(Primary) Responsibilities**:

- Perform tasks in the areas of sample collection/preparation, resampling, and chemical analysis.
- Laboratory maintenance, entering data from lab reports, ordering/purchasing lab and general supplies.
- Overseeing curing piles to identify when piles are ready for sampling.
- Test and record physical and chemical properties such as moisture, pH level, temperatures and porosity.
- Collect and label ground water samples from wells around the Niagara Campus, including the compost facility and landfill sites.
- Provides insight into and interpretation of results, collecting data where required and generating data for reports.
- Comply with all regulatory requirements (Ministry of Environment) and company policies/procedures as they pertain to this position.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of Safe Work Procedures.
- Maintain legible and detailed records (manual and electronic).
- Perform other duties as assigned.

**Skills/Knowledge/Experience Required**

The minimum requirements for education and experience are listed below. Consideration will be given to individuals with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Graduation from college in a related field such as biology, chemistry or environmental science/management. One to three years experience in a laboratory and production settings and/or operation of a process manufacturing facility or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, in oral and written form.
- Ability to understand technical manuals and scientific terminology applicable to operation.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must be able to work independently as well as in a group environment as part of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

**Working Conditions**:

**Travel Requirements**:
Minimal offsite travel will be required.

**Equipment Used**:
Work requires the use of office equipment such as computers, telephones and fax and photocopy machines up to 50% of the time.

**Physical Effort**:
The incumbent must regularly lift and /or move up to 22 kg (50 pounds) and occasionally lift and/or move up to 22 kg (50 pounds).

**Working Environment**:
The incumbent may be exposed to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions, to high noise environments, extremely dusty environments and chemicals used in the process.

**Mental Concentration**:
The incumbent would be exposed to situations which may cause minor mental stress. There are noticeable pressures from meeting deadlines, multitasking or producing accurate work. The stress levels felt would not be noticeably disruptive to the work nor would the unpleasant reaction be strong or persistent.
