Laboratory Director

**Summary**
The Laboratory Director is responsible for overseeing all laboratory operations, including staff, resources, and testing services. They are responsible for developing strategies for achieving the laboratory's goals and objectives, as well as setting policies and procedures for quality assurance and safety. They are also responsible for ensuring the laboratory is compliant with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. In addition, they must collaborate with other healthcare organizations to coordinate testing services and develop new protocols for testing.
**Responsibilities, Duties & Expectations**
- Oversee the inspection of all received samples to ensure proper labeling, accept samples, log received samples and properly store samples
- Plan, organize and execute molecular based diagnostic tests such that the requirements of ISO 15189:2012 are met
- Ensure all tests used for diagnostic testing are properly validated
- Report test results to management, client and OLIS where required
- Maintain client confidentiality for all diagnostic testing that is performed in the laboratory.
- Ensure that all samples are properly stored and/or properly disposed of
- Carry out standard operating procedures (SOP) involving laboratory techniques,calculations, operation of laboratory equipment and record keeping techniques related to molecular based diagnostic testing
- Record keeping including but not limited to lab notebooks, minutes from meetings, logs of samples, results from testing regarding the samples
- Ensure the maintenance and calibration of equipment in the lab is performed and maintaining associated records
- Carry out the development and validation of new testing methods when required
- Ensure a clean and safe laboratory environment is maintained
- Ensure that departments having conflicting interests, including Manufacturing and Sales & Marketing, do not adversely influence the laboratory’s compliance with the requirements of any of the ISO standards. Immediately report any potential conflicts of interest to the President.
- Provide supervision to Diagnostic Laboratory Supervisor, Diagnostic Laboratory Managers and Diagnostic Laboratory Technologists, as dictated by the President
- Ability to work in teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects
- Other duties and responsibilities as required
**Qualifications**:
This position requires the individual to obtain from a university an academic doctorate degree in a relevant area of chemical, physical, or biological science and
- has been certified by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, or the Canadian College of Microbiologists in a branch of laboratory medicine, or
- has at least two years of relevant post-graduate training or experience approved by the Director in a laboratory or laboratories approved by the Director; or
This position requires the individual to be a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO),
- has been certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in a branch of laboratory medicine, or
- has at least two years of relevant postgraduate training approved by the Director in a laboratory or laboratories approved by the director.
