**JOB PURPOSE**:
The Kaya Pomeh Mental Health Counsellor is an integral component of Kaya Pomeh's Educational Mission. The Mental Health Counsellor supports the development of students with guidance programs, counselling services, personal/social, educational, and career development they also provide assessment, case planning, and intervention for students at risk or experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental difficulties. Acting in a non-teaching capacity, of Kaya Pomeh's school counsellor will collaborate with staff, students, parents, and members of the community to further create and enhance an effective, healthy learning environment for all students registered at Kaya Pomeh's.
The Mental Health Counsellor will be responsible for developing and maintaining effective, healthy, and positive communications between the student, teachers and/or guardians by actively listening to parents/guardians. They will design, implement, and monitor interventions and provide counselling to students and their families. The Mental Health Counsellor recognizes the legislated responsibilities that are required in the capacity of a Mental Health Counsellor and responds to emergent issues and concerns by assessing the situation, identifying the most appropriate response, and recommending resources and assistance where necessary.
The Mental Health Counsellor will intervene in crisis situations, and will determine, develop, and implement appropriate management strategies. They will establish direct lines of communication and maintain effective liaison with community resources, probation and/or Police Services, mental health and community based youth serving organizations. They will act as a consultant/team member to school and community based committees/teams (i.e. staff meetings, student reviews, IEP reviews, case management updates, critical incident teams, risk assessment, etc.)
The Mental Health Counsellor will assist the students with their educational-planning such as research educational institutions, courses, and programs. Address any attendance issues that may arise, and studying skills that have been brought to Kaya Pomeh Mental Health Counsellor’s attention
**EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS**:
- Completion of Masters in Counselling or other related field is an asset
- Completion of Bachelors in Education and hold a valid Alberta Teachers Certification is an asset
- Three years school or community related experience is an asset
- Basic knowledge of psychiatric and developmental disorders affecting children and adolescents
- Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act (FIOP) Trained
- Certified in Standard First Aid with AED
- Cree language is an asset
- Minimum Class 5 Driver’s License and provide own transportation
- Clear Criminal Record Check/Intervention Record Check
**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
Required to work a total of 40 hours a week, at maskêkosak kiskinomâtowikamik School, while adhering to the Enoch Cree Nation Human Resources Policy & Procedure Manual.
**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months
Pay: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
