**This is a sessional position running from mid-September - end of April**
The Department of Theatre and Film at UWinnipeg is hiring a **full-time sessional Stagecraft Assistant**. The department produces several productions and events each year, operates a theatre and rehearsal space, and manages and maintains specialized equipment. These activities are designed to offer students an opportunity to complete graded coursework while gaining practical work experience.
**Responsibilities**:
- Assisting the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor in preparing for labs.
- Assisting with set ups, moves, and checking equipment for use.
- Preparing materials for the current group of students.
- Assisting the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor in managing and overseeing student activities in labs.
- Demonstrating and monitoring the safe use of shop tools and safe handling of materials.
- Assisting students in the interpretation of drawings and plans to execute production tasks.
- Conducting occasional labs independently when necessary.
- Observing, recording, assessing, and advising the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor about student productivity in labs.
- Assisting the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor in constructing some elements of scenery for public exercises.
- Assisting with the regular maintenance of the shop and equipment.
- Researching, ordering and arranging delivery of supplies under the direction of the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor.
- Anticipating, planning and working with the Production Coordinator and the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor to ensure lab and productions supplies are available for the student use.
- Preparing for student lab activities in the shop.
- Assisting in planning for all production scenic requirements.
- Assisting the Technical Supervisor/Stagecraft Instructor in selecting, packing and transporting required materials and tools off-campus to the Gas Station Theatre and other venues if necessary.
**Qualifications**:
- Minimum 2 years completed in an undergraduate university degree program with an emphasis in stagecraft and theatre production.
- Training in the use of shop equipment and power tools in a theatrical context.
- Knowledge of WHMIS materials and procedures.
- Experience in shop equipment maintenance is not required but would be an asset.
- Welding experience is an asset but not required.
- Two years of experience with shop equipment in a theatrical context may be accepted in lieu of specific training.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
- Ability to deal with suppliers in a professional manner.
- Ability to work with and oversee students in a lab setting.
- Ability to follow direction.
- Ability to learn and acquire new skills efficiently.
- Ability to work competently with hand and power tools.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Strong time management skills are essential.
**An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.**
**Condition(s) of Employment**:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Available to work evenings and weekends with notice.
**The salary range for this position will be from $17.43 to $18.93 hourly.**
