**Job Title: Rehabilitation Assistant**
**Department: Health Services**
**Position Overview**:
Reporting to: the Clinical Manager, the Rehabilitation Assistant (RA) works with patients to implement treatment plans under the direction and supervision of the IFNA (Independent First Nations Alliance) Physiotherapist and the Occupational Therapist. The RA will assess the patients' physical condition, emotional state, cognitive abilities and implement personalized treatment plans. The RA will provide ongoing support and guidance to help clients achieve their goals. The RA will work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and communicate effectively with patients and community members. Service delivery includes in-person care in remote communities as well as virtual platforms. This position requires a strong commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients within First Nations communities in a culturally competent manner. The RA will be responsible for clerical and administrative duties as assigned.

**Responsibilities**:
1. Implement personalized treatment plans for patients:
- Under the direction of a registered Physiotherapist or a registered Occupational Therapist, assist patients in carrying out programs and other interventions to improve client’s strength, mobility, flexibility, ability to perform activities of daily living, and work-related tasks.
- Monitor patient’s progress and request supervisor intervention as needed.
- Provide education and guidance that has been provided to patients and their families.
2. Prepare for patient interactions and use clinical decision making:
- Prepare for interactions prior to working with patients and understand their abilities and limitations.
- At the time of treatment, use clinical reasoning to determine if the patient is capable of completing their recommended programming.
- Defer to the Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist responsible for the client’s programming if there are any concerns.
- Tailor interventions to the unique needs of the patients and ensure the intervention is culturally appropriate.
3. Provide ongoing support and guidance to patients and families:
- Communicate regularly with clients to ensure they understand their treatment plan and are motivated to achieve their goals.
- Assists and educates patients and families in the proper use of adaptive and specialized equipment for activities of daily living.
- Provide support and encouragement to help clients cope with the challenges of their condition in a culturally competent manner.
- Assist in the design and presentation of in-service education sessions to community members, schools, patients, and families.
4. Provide support to practitioners and the administration team with administrative tasks as needed.
- Book travel and accommodations for practitioners’ community clinic trips.
- Contact patients regarding scheduling.
- Administer and collect consent forms and outcome measures; ensure they are filed, stored, and uploaded to patient’s medical records appropriately.
5. Collaborate with communities and internal departments:
- Work with the health team to connect with community members, leaders, and organizations to identify health needs and develop community-focused initiatives, such as workshops, group exercise classes, and health promotion campaigns.
- Provides education to community members about the benefits of physiotherapy and occupational therapy for people with varying abilities and injuries, to regain independent and achieve their goals.
6. Maintain accurate records:
- Document patient progress through detailed notes.
- Ensure client records are kept confidential and comply with all privacy regulations.
7. Participate in continuing education and professional development.
- Request mentorship as needed from Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist to learn, maintain, and enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
- Keep up to date on new developments in your field through post graduate courses and reading articles.
8. Adhere to ethical and professional standards.
- Adhere to ethical and professional standards in all aspects of patient care, including maintaining patient confidentiality, obtaining informed consent, and providing care that is respectful, non-judgmental, and culturally sensitive.
- Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements.
9. All employees who work at IFNA cover for each other during vacation, if someone is away sick or if there are demands on the organization that require extra time and effort to complete. This means occasionally they are asked to do tasks outside the normal scope of their position.
**Position Requirements**:
- Completion of a recognized post-secondary Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist Assistant diploma and/or Rehabilitation Assistant certificate program.
- Hold appropriate liability insurance.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
