Founded in 1915, the Department of Philosophy at UBC is one of the oldest departments in the Faculty of Arts. With approximately 800 undergraduate students, we offer major, minor and honours degrees in philosophy as well as combined majors in philosophy and economics, philosophy and political science, history and philosophy of science, and cognitive systems. We also offer Masters and PhD programs for those at the graduate level.

The Student Engagement Assistant works proactively and independently to provide coordination and support across all Philosophy Undergraduate student engagement initiatives and programs. In close collaboration with the Undergraduate Program Chair and the Department Head, this role assists with the development, planning, coordination, and implementation of customized undergraduate student engagement events and programs for undergrad students such as orientation (Imagine Day), Career Fairs, the New Major Cohort program, and the Colloquia series.This role develops and maintains a wide range of knowledge around Philosophy undergraduate student engagement programs and acts as the first point of contact for all student queries pertaining to undergraduate student engagement initiatives, events, and programs.

The Student Engagement Assistant is also responsible for event coordination and logistics, including scheduling and promotional support to undergraduate student events and programs such as the Philosophy Essay Clinic and special interest sessions such as career and alumni info events. This role also acts as department liaison for the Philosophy Students Association, provides support to the Equity and Diversity Officer, and develops promotional material for courses and the Philosophy department website and social media accounts.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The Undergraduate Engagement Assistant works along with, and under the general direction of the Chair Undergraduate, the Department Head and the Honours and Majors Program Chairs and the Equity Officer; they report directly to the Manager, Administration. Liaises with Arts Faculty Advising Offices, Enrolment Services and Arts ISIT and the ASC and ISC.

WORK PERFORMED
- Coordinates and implements existing student support programs including the New Majors Meet-up and Dialogue; the New Majors Cohort program; and the Ethics bowl
- In consultation with the department head, assists with the development of new professional and learning oriented student programming in response to student needs and interests
- Researches student engagement initiatives at other post-secondary educational institutions and consults with faculty members and department chair to determine whether specific programs are appropriate for department
- Actively researches local and global philosophy-related opportunities and events which may be of interest to undergrad students and alumni
- Creates and distributes regular newsletters to undergrad students promoting philosophy events and learning opportunities across the lower mainland
- Collaborates with faculty members to plan, coordinate schedule, and implement orientation programming
- Coordinates orientation and Imagine day activities, ensuring all activities flow smoothly

Plans and coordinates technical support, communications, logistics, and budgets for special events (i.e. speakers series, networking events, and workshops); tracks attendance and administers follow-up surveys;
- Schedules, coordinates and attends program-related events, as required; also, supports preparation and dissemination of promotional materials
- Develops entry, midpoint, and exit surveys in partnership with Undergraduate Program Chair which measure the UBC Philosophy student and alumni experiences
- Coordinates and distributes student development survey to gather information about student engagement
- Collects and analyzes student engagement survey results; compiles results into a report and makes suggestions to faculty and department head around improvements for student engagement programming
- Liaises with other departments on campus
- Acts as a point of contact for students, faculty and community partners seeking information about the student engagement programs
