The Multicultural Family Preservation Program increases the parenting capacity of Ministry (MCFD) referred

multicultural families, decreasing the potential of their children entering the care of the Ministry. Culturally agile

services and supports are required to promote family wellness and support family transitions, including reunifications.

This is addressed through assisting parents and caregivers in finding ways to meet the physical, emotional and

developmental needs of their children resulting in their enhanced safety and well-being.

The Outreach Family Counsellor will provide culturally agile services that focus on practical strategies and skill

development, which increases the family’s capacity to reduce identified risk factors, and be self-sustaining and stable.

They may also provide supportive visitation for parents and children in the care of Ministry of Children and Family

Development. Services are provided in the family’s home, in other community settings and in-office.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- Develop plans collaboratively with the families to engage in problem solving strategies to address problematic

behaviours.
- Provide support and service to families facing multiple challenges. Some of these families may be difficult to

engage with.
- Teach and model positive and appropriate parenting skills and strategies to enhance family functioning.
- Participate in Integrated Case management meetings relevant to referred families and work collaboratively

with MCFD Social Workers.
- Express a willingness to learn more about, and show respect for, the client’s worldview, belief systems and

means of problem solving in order to collaboratively develop and sustain culturally sensitive and agile
interventions.
- Provide household management and other life skills training; particularly life skills training related to issues of

settlement and integration.
- Maintain an up to date knowledge of community resources and provide appropriate referrals to clients to meet

their needs.
- Maintain client and service records and prepare reports in accordance with MCFD requirements COA standards

and agency policy.
- Participate in regular clinical and administrative supervision according to accreditation standards.
- Performs other duties, as required.

**Education, Training, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in social services or a related field and a minimum of (2) years’ experience working with

multicultural populations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, Dari or Pashto is required.
- Valid driver’s license and access to an appropriately insured personal vehicle for work purposes.
- Current Level 1 First Aid certificate is an asset.
- Crisis line experience is an asset.

**Knowledge:
**- Basic knowledge in trauma informed practice and positive behavior support

**Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated effectiveness as part of a staff team.
- Good judgmental and critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written, oral, interpersonal communication, and report writing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop program related reference and resource materials.
- Commitment to a solution focused therapy and strength-based approach.
- Ability to work independently, set priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to identify sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
- The ability to perform light lifting and bending.
- Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural and lifestyle diversity.
- Ability to use good judgement and critical thinking skills.
