PCRS is seeking a family counsellor to provide counselling support and skills development services to South Asian youth and their families who have experienced gang involvement.


Position Summary:


This position will provide direct one to one and group counselling to parents of South Asian families whose girls are involved in or are at risk of being involved in gangs in Surrey.

The counsellor will utilize evidence-based interventions such as attachment theory, child and adolescent growth and development, counselling theories such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused, and Existential and Experiential therapies.

The counsellor will balance clinical methodologies with relationship-based practice all within a strength based, trauma informed approach.

This position requires a sound understanding of best practice in gang interventions, a solid knowledge of South Asian Culture, a solid understanding of the gang concerns within the City of Surrey and must speak and write Hindi/Punjabi.

The counsellor also represents the program on community tables.

Dimensions of Work:

The counsellor is available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

Academic and Job Experience Required:

MSW, BSW or B.A. or equivalent education and Experience will be considered. Skills and Experience in crisis response areas, brief solution-focused counselling, mediation, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed practice. Group facilitation and cultural competency in working with South Asian youth and families.

Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector.
  • Proof of being fully Vaccinated for Covid 1
  • Standard first aid certificate and CPR
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License, with business insurance
  • Use of own vehicle (with reimbursement)
  • Clean Driver's Abstract
  • Sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills
  • Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong understanding of the South Asian community and female youth gang involvement style choices

Desired Requirements:

  • Familiarity with traumainformed practices
  • Solutionfocused and addictions counselling training
  • Mental health, sexual abuse, and depression/suicide/cooccurring disorder training
