Research Assistant- Phlebotomist

**Description**
The MOMENTUM research project is a collaborative of Kinesiology researchers at the University of Calgary. MOMENTUM is a cohort study, investigating wellness across menopause (pre, peri, and post). The phlebotomy position will be under the direct supervision of Dr. Culos-Reed and supported by the MOMENTUM core team of principle investigators (12 in Kinesiology), and the MOMENTUM research coordinator. The primary purpose of this position is to support the MOMENTUM cohort work, with assessments at the University of Calgary
This is a dynamic role where the incumbent is expected to work on MOMENTUM projects, reporting directly to the MOMENTUM primary investigators, and working with the MOMENTUM research coordinator. This is a recurring part-time position with variable hours (approximately 15-25 /week) performed at the University of Calgary. Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule. Shifts may vary according to participant enrolment and appointment scheduling.
The incumbent will perform blood draws and blood processing for the MOMENTUM cohort study. The incumbent will use their expertise in phlebotomy to effectively manage complex participant issues and minimize the potential for participant discomfort and errors within the sample collection. It is important that the incumbent has the initiative for professional development, ensuring their knowledge is current within the field. This role requires direct interaction with all study participants, as well as with other staff, students, and researchers; therefore, strong communication skills are required.
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Perform blood draws
- Process blood samples
- Aliquot serum and plasma for long-term storage
- Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures of study
- Keep records of all tests (database entry)
- Maintain participant confidentiality
- Relay participant feedback within cohort assessments
- All work will be supported by the MOMENTUM team
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- Completion of a phlebotomy certification course in Alberta, a college certificate in medical laboratory science, or certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science or professional equivalency
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience performing venipuncture (experience with woman between 40-60 an asset)
- Current CPR and First Aid Training
- Ability to support clinical data collection
- Ability to maintain accurate records and confidentiality of participant information
- Ability to manage participant testing in a fast-paced environment
- High level of effective organizational, time and personal initiative skills, teamwork, accuracy, and strong attention to detail
- Flexible work hours
- Experience in research environment
- Knowledge of REDCap
- Knowledge of University systems and policies (including ethics)
