Description

The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Ohlson Research initiative, this role is part of a clinical research program (Ohlson Research initiative) within the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute at the Cumming School of Medicine. Day to day supervision and delegation by the ORI Project Coordinator.

The work environment presents fluctuating periods of high volumes of work with varying complexity; moderate to high levels of stress. As a result, the Research Assistant must be able to adapt effectively with shifting priorities on a daily basis. The incumbent will work independently and as part of a team.

The Ohlson Research Initiative is a clinical translational research program focused on head and neck cancer. Our team is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of head and neck cancer biology and clinical outcomes. We are also involved in developing innovative approaches to surgery. This knowledge will enable the development of precision therapies for patients with head and neck cancer as well as the design and delivery of high value healthcare.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Collects and enters data through the use of clinical and research information systems (databases)
  • Interacts with clinicians and ensures complete data collection for research projects
  • Interacts with patients in a professional, confidential, and courteous manner
  • Ensures that confidentiality of data collected and stored are maintained
  • Schedules and coordinates meetings, seminars and other research-related activities
  • Reports on status of research activities
  • Identifies and recruits study participants. Tracks and schedules patients throughout their participation in longitudinal studies
  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies
  • Performs additional functions relevant to the clinical research activities of the program

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Professional health training essential (e.g. LPN)
  • 3 to 5 years of experience required
  • Experience working in a research administration role including understanding of working towards research-imposed deadlines
  • Highly motivated and capable of working in a fast paced, technical environment
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in working with data
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to work independently, using initiative and good judgment
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Database experience essential
  • Experience with healthcare statistics (or a willingness to learn) an asset
  • Familiarity with medical terminology essential
  • Previous experience in working in a university or healthcare environment would be an asset
  • Familiar with PeopleSoft systems an asset
