to join our Indigenous Support team
**in a Central Term as**:
K - 12 Instructional Coach - Indigenous Education
1.0 term position to August 31, 2024
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Indigenous, Equity and Human Rights Division, and the supervision of the Principal of Indigenous Education, the Indigenous Education Instructional Coach collaborates with students, educators, administrators, parents/guardians/families, and the broader Indigenous community to identify and address systemic barriers to learning and well-being (e.g. academic, mental health, justice, cultural knowledge and decolonization), using an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework to support Indigenous students and their families.
Eligibility
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with Indigenous students, parents/guardians/families, and community partners, the Indigenous Education Learning Team and educators, and administrators, to implement the work of the district and other Board and Ministry initiatives as related to Indigenous Education;
Liaise with Indigenous community groups, agencies and organizations to enhance and support school and community communication and partnerships;
Provide support to teachers and in-school leaders, responding to questions from parents and/or community members on matters relating to Indigenous Education, perspectives, diversity, historical and contemporary contexts, curriculum, policy and program;
In collaboration with the Indigenous Education Learning Team and various Indigenous community and agencies, plan and promote events that explore, honour and embrace the lived experiences of Indigenous identities (such as Indigenous Youth Symposium);
Plan and deliver effective, culturally relevant and appropriate presentations with respect to Indigenous perspectives, history and cultural knowledge to teachers and administrators in small and large group settings;
Provide guidance to administrators and staff in fostering spaces that are inclusive and nurture welcome, safety and well-being for Indigenous students and their families;
Work effectively, both independently and as a contributing member of the central team, in providing a broad range of support services to teachers and in-school leaders;
Remain current with Ministry of Education directives and policies, and with research and developments in curriculum related to Indigenous Education;
Support staff and departments to recognize, name and address experiences of colonialism, anti-Indigeneity and oppression;
Criteria for Selection
demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Indigenous traditional teachings of culture, perspectives, values, history, and Indigenous knowledge;
have deep connections to the local Indigenous community;
support and integrate inclusion of Indigenous perspectives, and decolonization across the curriculum;
be able to support integrating resources into the curriculum (K-12) that reflect the diversity of Indigenous Nations and communities of Turtle Island;
advocate for and support implementation of Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Languages Courses;
promote initiatives that support success and academic achievement and well-being for Indigenous students;
demonstrate knowledge of professional, instructional, and cultural resources related to Indigenous Education;
Ability to develop and maintain close working relationships and collaborate with Indigenous families, Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, communities and partners;
demonstrate current knowledge of Ministry of Education Policies and district initiatives with respect to Indigenous Education;
demonstrate experience and expertise in innovative teaching, learning strategies and cross-curricular instructional strategies;
demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the Ontario Curriculum (K-12);
demonstrate knowledge and practice of instructional strategies appropriate for Indigenous students (K-12);
be familiar with and have a clear vision with regard to implementation of the Ontario First Nations, Metis and Inuit Policy Framework;
Excellent communication, networking and leadership skills;
Interpersonal and communication skills to support school communities and provide advocacy in complex situations;
Organization and time management skills to plan, prioritize work, collaborate with central departments and coordinate with multiple school sites;
