Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), the OHS Consultant (Environmental Specialist), plays a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and environmental standards. The Environmental Specialist is a key member of the HSE team providing environmental expertise, support, and services in addition to performing a broader health and safety role. The Environmental Specialist, while specializing in environmental matters, also participates in HSE audits and investigations, hazard assessments and a range of activities associated with the Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) and Environmental Management System (EMS). This position is involved in developing and supporting the implementation of and providing quality assurance for hazardous materials and environmental management programs, as well as related standards, guidelines, and procedures.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Managing and administering the hazardous materials and environmental management programs.
- Coordinating hazard/risk assessments.
- Conduct environmental assessments of NAIT facilities, identifying potential hazards, and recommending effective control measures to mitigate risks.
- Perform audits and inspections to evaluate the effectiveness of safety and environmental programs and produce detailed reports with actionable recommendations.
- Provide expert guidance on environmental management practices, waste reduction, pollution control, and sustainability initiatives. Investigation, administration and reporting hazardous materials and environmental concerns, exposures, and occurrences to the appropriate authorities.
- Develop and implement customized environmental policies, procedures and programs that align with industry standards and legal requirements. Auditing Business Unit environmental programs and recommending corrective actions.
- Stay current with regulatory changes, emerging trends, and best practices in environmental management to ensure NAIT remain compliant and ahead of industry developments. Leading managing and administering the Environmental Management Advisory Committee.
- Cultivate strong relationships with the NAIT community, serving as a trusted advisor and resource for all matters related to environmental management.
- Supporting cultural health, safety, and environmental development and mitigating the impact of hazards and incidents.

**Skills & Abilities**:

- Collaborative, inclusive, and works effectively independently and in a team environment.
- Strong knowledge of OHS regulations, environmental laws, and industry standards.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess risks, analyze data, and provide practical solutions.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
- Proficiency in utilizing OHS software, environmental management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with stakeholders and colleagues.

**Qualifications**:

- Post-secondary education in Environmental Management/Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
- Professional certifications such as Environmental Professional (EP), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) Industrial Hygienist or equivalent credentials.
- Certifications in chemical safety and radiation safety are an asset.
- Proven experience (3+ years) working as an OHS Consultant or Environmental Specialist Related experience working in a large diverse organization.
- Equivalencies may be considered.

**Remuneration**: $3,023.71 - $4,005.89 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
