The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is seeking applicants for the position of Director, Alberta Transplant Institute (ATI) and holder of the Alberta Health Services Chair in Transplantation. This is a 0.3 FTE position, reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry or delegate.

The Director of ATI, an official University of Alberta research institute, and holder of the Alberta Health Services Chair in Transplantation, is responsible for the strategic leadership of the institute in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry Dean, Deputy Dean, and Vice-Deans (Research) and in consultation with various strategic partners / constituencies (internal and external to the University of Alberta). The Director is responsible for ensuring the execution of strategic deliverables that contribute to the success of the institute.

The vision of the ATI is to achieve global impact through cutting-edge research in transplantation.

The institute brings together more than 180 investigators from 7 University of Alberta Faculties and their scientific teams working on research into organ donation and transplantation. Their aim is to achieve global impact by conducting cutting-edge research that leads to improvements in patient care and health. The ATI is broad in scope and includes researchers who are part of multiple transplant programs including kidney, liver, heart, lung, and islet cell.

The appointment is for a five-year term, renewable upon favorable review by the Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

**Responsibilities of the Director include**:

- Develop an environment to support high-impact research. Foster excellence in all aspects of transplantation and organ donation research, including discovery, clinical and translational research.
- Lead the development and implementation of funding support collaboratively with Advancement.
- As a University Institute, collaborate and strengthen links with local and provincial stakeholders (including but not limited to: Alberta Health Services and relevant clinical teams, Alberta Innovates, Alberta Health Services Strategic Clinical Networks, University Hospital Foundation, and patients and family groups) and identify and move forward transplantation research priorities provincially, nationally, and internationally.
- Champion a culture of collaborative interdisciplinary research.
- Collaborate with national and international research organizations to ensure that ATI’s activities are well integrated with opportunities and leading trends in transplantation research.
- Maintain effective relationships and work collaboratively with other Institutes, Centres, Departments, Faculties, Colleges, and partners to meet objectives (including but not limited to facilitating recruitment of scientists, educators and clinicians).
- Identify emerging research themes and priorities, and help mobilize investigators to develop large-scale ATI projects (including research infrastructure and core facilities) from basic discovery/pre-clinical research, early first-in-human trials, health outcomes, and health services research, in order to obtain major grants.
- Develop and coordinate career, educational, and training opportunities for ATI trainees.
- Plan and manage the ATI annual budget and staff, ensuring efficient operation and disbursement of funds, and develop and implement a business model for financial self-sustainability.
- Advocate for the ATI and transplantation and organ donation research to the public.

**As a holder of the Alberta Health Services Chair in Transplantation, the individual is responsible to**:

- Provide leadership in the development and maintenance of a world-class program in transplantation research, training and education;
- Promote collaborative research across disciplines, building on strengths and utilizing the existing resources available in the University of Alberta;
- Support research and training development and/or initiate new research ventures;
- Attract outstanding students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates and faculty members to the University of Alberta; and
- Acknowledge the Alberta Health Services Chair in Transplantation in scholarly outputs.
