The Halifax Trojan Aquatic Club (HTAC) was founded in 1967 and has grown over the years to become the largest and most decorated competitive swim team in Atlantic Canada. HTAC has achieved multiple Provincial Team titles and Provincial Records, and the club has a rich history of National Members, Olympians, and World Record holders. We currently use two 50m pool facilities to service our members. HTAC provides competitive programs for all levels and ages, from grassroots to Masters.

Our current swim team has 250 members and 16 staff members: 30 pre-competitive swimmers, 30 swimmers enrolled in the National stream (Striving for/meeting Easterns, Nationals, Trials standards), the remaining 190 swimmers enrolled in various levels of competition (NovaTech, AA, AAA), 15 coaches, and an office manager. Our mission is to ensure all swimmers are supported through diverse program offerings and to continue to develop as one of the region’s top swim programs.

Reporting to the HTAC Board of Directors, the Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of the club. They will be expected to:
Culture
- Promotes diversity, equity and inclusion throughout all levels of the club.
- Develops and maintains a culture of safety, respect and inclusion that supports healthy and successful athletes.
- Fosters an environment that promotes achievement of athlete personal goals through providing positive influence, models behaviour in accordance with the Club Code of Conduct, and provides mentorship.
- Recruits, mentors, motivates, evaluates, supports the development, and manages the performance of all coaching staff for the Club.
- Embeds contemporary and modern training modalities and methods and an evidence based approach to athlete development.
- Upholds, models and enforces the Club Code of Conduct at all times.

Operations
- Creates and implements an annual plan based on Board approved budget and strategic priorities including but not limited to the development of staffing plans, athlete development programs, training templates and schedules, curricula, coaching methodology, and assessment criteria for all levels, from grassroots to Masters.
- Ensures the operation of the Club is conducted in accordance with approved budgets and policies.
- Accompanies Club swimmers and appoints/selects Club Coaches to attend local, provincial and national level meets, with priority to accompany high performance swimmers in cases of conflict, and appoints delegate coaches as needed.
- Creates and implements plans for recruiting new and diverse athletes to the Club all age groups.
- Ensures compliance with principles, policies, and guidelines of Swimming Canada, Swim Nova Scotia, SafeSport guidelines, and the rules, regulations, and requirements for participating in competition at the local, regional, provincial, and national levels.
- Develops and enforces risk management processes and practices that provide adequate safeguards and makes recommendations to the board on risk management policy.
- Provides direction to the Club Administrator/Office Manager for pool/facility bookings and steps in as needed to implement adjustments (e.g., in the case of unexpected circumstances).
- In consultation with staff, contributes to the preparation of an annual budget for approval by the Board.
- Contributes content for the website and posts to Club social media accounts.

Stakeholder Relationships
- Communicates regularly with the Board and attends monthly Board meetings to provide progress reports.
- Makes recommendations to the Board on continuous improvement of the Club to optimize achievement of strategic objectives.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with all Club partners and stakeholders including external organizations (e.g., Dalhousie School of Health and Human Performance, Sport Nova Scotia, Sport Centre Atlantic).
- Represents the Club at events such as fundraisers and functions.
- Partners with the Club Administrator/Office Manager to implement member engagement activities such as team building, and social or annual events such as a banquet.
- Under the direction of the Board, represents the Club within the sports ecosystem to further investment and support for swimming.

Qualifications and competencies:

- A minimum of five years of swim coaching experience, with progressive responsibilities.
- Experience coaching at Canadian Junior National Championship level
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. Previous experience as a Head Coach at a competitive swim club is an asset.
- Outstanding leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- A good understanding of Swimming Canada’s Athlete Development Plan.
- Computer skills, including experience using Hy-Tek Team Manager and Team Unify computer software.
- A clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification. NLS certification considered an asset.
