Prince Albert, Canada STR8 UP Full time

STR8 UP is hiring a fulltime Community Outreach Worker, to work within the Federal institutions (i.e., Saskatchewan Penitentiary, Willow Cree Healing Lodge & Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge etc.). This job will be based out of Prince Albert, SK.

The Community Outreach Worker reports to the Saskatoon Coordinator of this program and works in accordance with the mission, vision, values and philosophy of STR8 UP.

**About STR8 UP**

STR8 UP:10,000 Little Steps To Healing Inc. is a non-profit, charitable organization that assists individuals wanting to liberating themselves from gangs, addictions and criminal street lifestyles.

**Job Purpose and Scope**

STR8 UP’s outreach supports individuals in correctional facilities and the community as they move through the justice system and transition out of the gang lifestyle to become responsible community members. They face major socio-economic and health challenges, systemic racisms, addictions and individual challenges. Community Outreach Workers advocates, mediates, counsels, mentors and negotiates resources on their behalf. Must be living a healthy lifestyle.

**Outreach Responsibilities**
- Develop positive working relationships with Elders, Chaplain, CSC staff, within the prison system
- Conduct sharing circles in facilities and meet with members in group settings for fellow-ship and programming
- Conduct intake, ongoing case planning and self-assessments with new member
- Maintain intake, case planning and attendance and referral records
- Advocate in justice, corrections, social services and other sectors for community supports
- Provide one-to-one life skills and problem-solving counselling
- Accompany and support members attending important appointments
- Assist in obtaining essentials to community living: Identification, financial assistance, housing, education, employment etc...
- Arrange access to spiritual and cultural practices to support healing
- Help maintain family contact during incarceration and in the community
- Arrange and assist in addictions programming
- Participate in STR8 UP presentations and other activities
- Provide information about services and opportunities in the community
- Meet with staff to help develop new initiatives and strengthen organizational strategies
- Identify partnerships for services in the community
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

**Qualifications and Qualities**
- At least 5 years justice sector experience
- B.A. or equivalent education and experience
- Able to provide a current Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check for clearance in CSC facilities
- Valid Driver’s License
- Knowledge of First Nations & Metis traditions, protocols and cultural practices
- Strong understanding of issues facing people with barriers and related knowledge of relevant services and programs available both locally and provincially
- Practical, organized, decisive, motivated to learn and open-minded
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation and mediation skills
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques
- Understanding of professional boundaries

Salaries are based on STR8 UP current salary grid $25-28 per hour
