Emergency preparedness is a critical aspect of CCH operations. It is essential that all staff and physicians receive training and understand their roles and responsibilities in this field.

**Summary of responsibilities**:

Reporting to the Vice-President, Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer, the Director, Professional Practice, Infection Prevention and Control, and Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness will serve as a senior member of the leadership team and provide strategic leadership and advice on professional practice issues in the clinical, education, and quality domains, as identified by Clinical Directors, Clinical Managers, and Clinical Nurse Educators. The Director, will also establish, foster and maintain a corporate collaborative practice environment by providing professional leadership, structures, and processes for the advancement of professional practice. A key function of the Director, will be to lead the Professional Practice Model management throughout the organization. The Director will also manage union and non-union staff and provide leadership to the Clinical Nurse Educators to ensure that clinical core competencies, knowledge and skills are attained and reflective of the most current evidence-based person-centered care. The Director, Professional Practice, Infection Prevention and Control, and Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness will also be accountable for understanding, analyzing and developing strategies for resolution of the clinical practice issues associated with nursing at the hospital. In Collaboration with the Vice-President, Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer, the Director, will assist in policy and standard development to ensure nurses work safely and to full scope according to the standards and guidelines of the College of Nurses of Ontario, evidence-based best practices, and the principles established to guide care delivery at CCH.

General Accountabilities:

- Develops structures and processes which integrate evidence-informed nursing practice in policies, procedures, practice guidelines, standards and nursing performance management.
- Leads the development, management, and maintenance of the CCH Professional Practice Model and components within.
- Provides leadership in the growth and development of a culture of continuous professional and interprofessional development.
- Provides direction and oversight for the coordination and delivery of corporate Nursing Orientation for new nurses and nurses returning from leaves of absence.
- Initiates and participates in knowledge translation activities to ensure that goals, objectives, policies and procedures are integrated and understood by all stakeholders, including nurses, allied health professionals, physicians, and others.
- Engages in ongoing evaluation of the goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital to ensure they continue to meet the strategic direction and professional practice standards of the organization.
- Works with other disciplines and departments to advise on practice issues related to best practice guidelines and regulatory requirements (i.e. narcotic administration, medication administration for physicians and RT’s).
- Works in an advisory capacity to Human Resources for the development of special projects (development of a sustainable learning management system, hospital orientation, corporate education).
- Collaborates with the Quality Improvement & Risk Management department along with the Patient Relations Specialist to improve the quality of patient care and support quality improvement activities.
- Collaborates with the Clinical Informatics team in management of documentation standards and clinical workflows related to practice and the electronic patient record.
- Participates in quality initiatives related to improving the patient experience.
- Lead the Occupational Health and Safety Function to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate the occupational health nursing, and disability management service policies, practices/processes to ensure effective delivery in order to promote a healthy and safe workplace, reduce disability/absenteeism, and workplace injury claims and costs, while ensuring legal compliance, as well as within the strategic goals of the organization.
