**Job Summary**:

Reporting to the Long Term Care (LTC) Program Manager, the Behaviour Supports Ontario (BSO) Therapeutic Advisor, utilizes the BSO framework, Fixing LTC Act and relevant regulations for residents in LTC. The Therapeutic Advisor is responsible to ensure enhanced, integrated and cross-sector services that meet the needs of older adults, by using collaborative approach to address responsive behaviours in all residents in the LTC Home. This role plans, implements, evaluates, trains, advises and coaches on non-pharmological approaches to intervening in responsive episodes using strategies outlined in Positive Approach to Care, Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA), UFIRST / PIECES and DementiAbility.

**Education**:

- Degree or Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation
- Certified GPA Coach
- Certified in Positive Approach to Care (minimum Trainer).
- Trained in DementiAbility in the past 2 years
- DementiAbility Second level of competency an asset
- Trained and proficient in UFIRST and/or PIECES
- Current certificate in CPR and First Aid
- Adult Education Certificate is preferred
- Preference to those who have a membership in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) or (CTRA) Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association
- All qualifications must meet the definitions under MDS-RAI guidelines/AIS testing

Knowledge
- A minimum of 4 years experience delivering therapeutic recreational programs to seniors living with dementia and associated behaviours, preferably in a long-term care or hospital setting
- Extensive knowledge of the Behaviour Supports Ontario (BSO) framework
- Knowledge in Gerontology, Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias
- Experience in working with mental health and Acquired Brain Injury
- Demonstrated proof of mentoring, training and coaching others
- Excellent knowledge of internal and external community resources
- Point Click Care knowledge an asset

**Responsibilities**:
**_ Educating, Coaching, Mentoring and Auditing staff to the BSO framework (35% of time)_**:

- Works collaboratively with all staff in the LTC home to plan, implement, train, advise, coach and evaluate, on non-pharmological approaches to intervening with responsive episodes using strategies outlined in Positive Approach to Care, GPA, UFIRST / PIECES and Dementiability.
- Acts as a mentor to staff as Subject Matter Expert.
- Enhances staff skills in managing responsive behaviours by providing leadership, coaching, training and mentorship “real time” and addressing any staff concerns.
- Annual training of GPA and PAC to staff.
- Develop, facilitate and schedule other identified education sessions.
- Leads the Responsive Behaviour Team huddles.
- Uses the PIECES framework to strategize the meaning behind the resident’s behaviour and review recommendations.
- Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to develop non-pharmological therapeutic recreation interventions to minimize escalation of behaviours and meet the resident needs.
- Facilitates BSO and in-home education sessions for ongoing learning.
- Work alongside staff observing and assisting, providing in the moment coaching and identifying the meaning behind the behaviour.
