Job Description Summary

This technician will be responsible for day to day operations of the CMMT DNA Sequencing, and Bioanalyzer Core Facilities. These facilities provide DNA Sequencing and genotyping services on the ABI 3500xl Genetic Analyzer and RNA/DNA micro-fluidic analysis on the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer system.

Organizational Status

The incumbent will report to the core facility manager and Director of Core Facilities, who reports to the director of the CMMT.

Work Performed
- Run the CMMT DNA Sequencing Core Facility to perform DNA sequencing and genotyping of client samples on an 3500xl Genetic Analyzer.
- Run the CMMT Bioanalyzer Core Facility to process client samples on the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer.
- Responsible for client communications regarding sample submissions, troubleshooting and results.
- Responsible for prompt sample processing to maintain facility's typical 1 to 2 day turn-around time. Occasional brief weekend work (typically less than an hour) may be necessary.
- Together with supervisor, work to provide high level of service to help ensure client satisfaction.
- Responsible for quantifying client DNA using spectrophotometer and/or fluorometer.
- Responsible for equipment and facility maintenance and cleaning.
- Liaise with vendor service engineers for equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Assist with client communications regarding billing.
- Responsible for data entry for cost recovery activities.
- Responsible for purchasing and maintaining inventory of supplies and consumables.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining standard operating procedure documents.
- Assisting with facility marketing activities.
- Assisting with calibration and maintenance of shared equipment.
- Assisting with other related activities as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The technician will work largely independently and will be responsible for managing their schedule according to the workload which changes daily. Accuracy and attention to detail is critically important. Errors such as mixing up of client samples, incorrect sample handling/processing, or processing delays would impact client research and significantly affect facility operations and reputation.

Supervision Received

The technician will work largely independently on a day-to-day basis, with overall direction and guidance on specific activities, priority and timing from the Director of Core Facilities.

Supervision Given

The technician may provide some supervision to junior technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.A minimum of a B. Sc in biological sciences, with some courses in genetics, cell and molecular biology and with additional training in a related field.Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience working in a core service facility is a strong asset.

Experience with DNA Sequencing and specifically with ABI capillary genetic analyzers is a strong asset. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to effectively use [job-specific software] at an intermediate level. (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel).

Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.

Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

Effective organizational skills a must.

Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
