**Position Description**:
The **Risk Management Specialist** supports The Hospital for Sick Children’s risk management program, providing guidance in alignment with the hospital's strategic plan, current legislation, and applicable standards. Responsibilities include fostering a culture of compliance and risk identification/management by supporting staff in proactive risk mitigation activities, advising on clinical and operational risk matters, supporting hospital interactions with law enforcement, managing the liability and property insurance claims process, and leading reviews with a view to minimizing risk.

**Key Areas of Responsibility**:

- Provide expert clinical risk analysis and advice, providing support at all levels of the organization.
- Advise on matters of a complex medical-legal nature including challenging patient/family issues, consent/capacity issues, and decision making/parenting time, while working closely with the Office of Patient and Family Experience, Legal Services, Social Work, the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect team, Protection Services, and Clinical leaders.
- Act as Hospital liaison for law enforcement matters, supporting interactions between the hospital and law enforcement.
- Support the hospital’s response in investigations my regulatory bodies, including health professional colleges.
- Provide risk management consultation services to support staff in the assessment of risks associated with new services, programs, delivery models, partnerships, and collaborations.
- Support the hospital's liability and property insurance programs, ensuring insurer requirements are met, including annual submissions, risk assessment checklists, etc.
- Manage the submission and management of liability and property claims, including liaising with the insurer, legal counsel, and hospital departments.
- Represent the Risk Management and Privacy Department on hospital committees and meetings.
- Identify risk events requiring organizational or targeted review and coordinate the execution of internal reviews, investigations, analysis, evaluation and debrief of such events, providing support at all levels of the organization.
- Work with the Quality Department staff to receive plans to correct clinical risk and reports of patient safety issues, ensuring adherence to claims reporting requirements, legislative/regulatory standards and that unsafe clinical practices are addressed.
- Support hospital efforts to prevent and respond to escalated family caregiver behaviours, including reviews of reported events, consultations on risks, and the development of responsibilities letters, alerts, and safety plans.
- Lead educational activities and presentations related to risk management.
- Assist in the development or review of policies and procedures related to risk management in general.
- Other activities, as assigned by the Director, Privacy & Risk Management.

**Qualifications / Education**:

- Undergraduate degree in a health discipline is required and a master’s degree in risk management, patient safety, healthcare administration, or a related field is preferred.
- **3+ years in a health care risk management, patient safety, or quality management role and/or combined clinical experience is required.**:

- Experience in clinical risk management preferred.
- Risk management certificate an asset.
- Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting health records.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong critical thinking, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in Root Cause Analysis.
- Experience in knowledge transfer/education.
- Knowledge of various legislations and regulations affecting SickKids including but not limited to the _Public Hospitals Act_, _Excellent Care for All Act_, _Quality of Care Information Protection Act_, _Health Care Consent Act_, as well as Accreditation Canada Standards and Health Canada regulations.
