JOB DESCRIPTION:
Shared Health Diagnostic Services provides laboratory testing for patient care. Two summer placement positions have been created to work with Mass Spectrometry testing; one in the toxicology lab at SBH and one for Special Chemistry (Mass Spectrometry) lab at HSC. Mass Spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical tool used for analysis of biological fluids for clinical and forensic use. Toxicology lab performs MS-based testing of drugs, while Special Chemistry lab at HSC offers testing in the areas of endocrinology, oncology, and biochemical genetics. Summer students will work under the direction of a Clinical Biochemist or Laboratory Scientist. Primary responsibilities include performing reagent preparations, specimen extractions and analyzing data from experiments to assist with method development and validation of clinical and/or forensic tests. Some experience with pipetting, volumetric measuring, weighing and concentration calculations is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Shared Health Diagnostic Services is looking for two exceptional university students (funding requires student will be returning to school in the fall of 2024). We are interested in employing hardworking students with skills and/or academic background in the following areas: analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, and chromatography. Hands-on lab skills in volumetric pipetting, weighing, solution preparation with volumetric glassware and stoichiometric calculations are an asset. - Strong analytical, time management and communication skills.
- Eagerness to learn and problem solve in a variety of tasks.
- Effectively work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to read, understand and appreciate scientific writing and journal publications.

The ability and initiative to self-teach is essential. On-the-job training will be provided by the lab scientists and lab technologists.
