**The opportunity**:
The University of Manitoba is looking for an Academic Advisor. This position will be responsible for providing Academic Advising to students in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Working closely with the Faculty’s other Student Services staff, the Associate Dean (Academic) and the Director of the School of Agriculture. The Academic Advisor is responsible for general student advising, advising on academic assessments, maintaining academic records, advising on admissions, assisting with academic calendar updates, student registration and program planning and any other advising related duties as needed.
**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:
- A University Bachelor's degree required.
- A degree in the area of Agricultural and Food Sciences or in Life Sciences preferred.
- At least two years of directly related academic advising experience required.
- A thorough knowledge of student services offered on the Fort Garry U of M campus and familiarity with the Fort Garry U of M campus is preferred.
- Experience with Aurora Student information Systems (Self-Services and Aurora Admin) required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and time management skills.
- Must be able to multi-task, establish/adapt priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Must be able to understand academic advising approaches and strategies.
- Problem solving, decision making, planning and goal setting skills required.
- Understanding of the needs and experiences of students required.
- Must be able to employ culturally inclusive active listening techniques.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
- Must have excellent word processing, spreadsheet and data management skills using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint, MS Teams, and Outlook.
- Working with website maintenance is an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and group settings is required.
- Must be able to demonstrate empathy.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team is required.
- Must be able to support students to build personal capacity.
- Must demonstrate sensitivity in working with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and in working with students with disabilities.
- Ability to use inclusive, respectful language in all communication is required.
- Ability to identify and implement appropriate crisis management and intervention responses is required.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality that follows FIPPA and PHIA requirements.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
