Job Summary

The Research Manager will report to Dr. Roberto Sassi, Chair of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division of the UBC Department of Psychiatry, with co-supervision by Drs. Martha J. Ignaszewski, Senior Medical Director of Substance Use and Concurrent Disorders at BCCH, and Michael Krausz, LEEF Chair in Addiction Research with UBC Psychiatry. The role of the research manager is to support the development of an academic research program regarding youth substance use and concurrent disorders, focusing on youth and families who are at high risk of overdose.

The Research Manager will be actively involved in all components of the academic program from project conceptualization through realization, with guidance and direction provided by the extended team. The Research Manager provides support, coordination, and communication for the administrative, academic and financial activities of the research program.

Organizational Status

The Research Manager will report directly to Dr. Sassi and Dr. Ignaszewski, and will work closely with Dr. Krausz and the research team. The Research Manager liaises with BC Children’s Research Institute, and UBC research administrative units including the Office of Research Services, the Research Ethics Board, and the Faculty of Medicine’s Research Office. Relationships with other universities at both national/international levels as well as partners within the research networks as required.

Work Performed- Managing the substance use and concurrent disorders research operations at all stages including preparation and project conceptualization, planning, execution, monitoring and submission of supporting documentation, and reporting- Involving in informing medium and long term strategic planning and core research infrastructure development- Coordinating and managing work plans and timelines for research projects- Leading and developing the implementation of research plans- Optimizing research team workflow and processes to enhance efficiency and enable improve study planning and progress tracking, including liaising with REB committees, and submitting and maintaining appropriate ethics board documentation- Managing and overseeing data collection process- Developing and implementing project proposals and reports- Leading the creation of budgets, ensuring compliance with granting agency policies and procedures- Ensuring that all requirements at all institutional levels are met and maintained- Assisting with the supervision of all grant management functions, including preparation of budgets, submission of new proposals, and other required documents to federal and private funding agencies- Monitoring and ensuring compliance with budgets and expenditures related to designated and sponsored funds- Preparing budgets and forecasting for all research projects and activities.- Performing other related duties as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Manager is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner. Patient confidentiality must be respected when dealing with research data. Errors made could influence the ability of research staff to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the investigators. As data and results may be disseminated to other research partners, their results and credibility can be negatively influenced by the researcher's error.

Supervision Received

Regular direction and bi-weekly supervision will be provided by Drs. Sassi, Ignaszewski and Krausz. The post-holder should be able to work independent
