Overview
The Chief Financial Officer is a key part of the executive team, works with all management on many aspects of the Conservatory’s operations, and is accountable for the administrative and financial operations of the organization. This includes implementation of the organization’s financial strategic goals, the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to ensure the organizations assets are used in accordance with approved budgets, policy development as member of the Finance & Audit Committee, management of day-to-day accounting tasks, and accurately reporting financial results. The CFO directly oversees the Accounting staff, the Community School Registrar and Registrar’s Office, and the Librarian.
Key Responsibilities
**1. Planning**
- Assist in formulating the company’s future direction and supporting tactical initiatives.
- Monitor and direct the implementation of financial strategic business plans.
- Manage the budgeting processes, including working with all other department heads.
**2. Operations**
- Participate in key decisions as a member of the Senior Management Committee.
- Manage the accounting, investment, registration, library, and human resource areas of the organization.
- Oversee the company’s transaction processing systems and ensure accuracy and best-use of the customer-facing registration software.
- Implement operational best practices.
**3. Financial**
- Assist in completing accounting entries and preparation of accounts receivable entries and invoices for transactions other than those relating to student registrations.
- Review and approve all payments, payables, and payroll.
- Monitor cash balances, cash forecasts, and manage debt requirements.
- Perform month-end reconciling of all asset and liability General Ledger accounts.
- Monitor invested funds, in particular the Endowment Funds.
- Prepare department and activity internal reports.
- Prepare grant budgets, monitor grant usage, and prepare follow up reports.
- Report financial results to the Board of Directors.
- Prepare annual financial statements.
- Complete and file quarterly GST/HST returns and rebates and the annual T3010 with CRA.
**4. Risk Management**
- Construct and monitor reliable control systems.
- Maintain appropriate insurance coverage.
- Ensure that the organization complies with all regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies.
- Report issues and propose policies to the finance & audit committee of the Board of Governors.
- Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations.
**5. Third Parties**
- Maintain banking relationships.
- Maintain supplier relationships.
- Maintain other relationships (Customers, Donors, etc.).
Qualifications and Requirements
As a not-for-profit charitable organization, the organization is made up of a small administrative team and the CFO takes a very hands-on approach and is often required to directly process transactions, perform reconciliations, monitor receivables & payables, coordinate HR issues, work with staff on solving their system issues, etc.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual salary range: $115,000-$125,000, plus paid annual leave, plus a paid week during an institutional closure for the December holidays. Health and retirement benefits include an RSP group program at BMO with matching contributions up to 5% of salary.
