Job Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Assistant will assist in the coordination and administration of the Paediatric Research at Queen’s (PRAQ) units’ new and ongoing research projects. This will include tasks such as: updating study documentation, creating databases, extracting and validating data, performing analyses, assisting with the preparation of written summaries of literature reviews; participation in experimental design and optimization; use of independent judgement to adapt procedures as the need arises; and communication/liaison with external agencies and institutions regarding project research. This position will supervise junior staff/students, and perform administrative duties, such as scheduling and bookkeeping.
The Research Assistant will respond to requests for information, and provide advice and direction. The Research Assistant will ensure maintenance of lab equipment and is responsible for safe management of hazardous materials. The Research Assistant will help in research related activities of pediatric residents, graduate and undergraduate students.
**Job Description**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Assist with the coordination of trials and other projects of PRAQ, including assessing, developing and executing strategies to support new initiatives.
- Help in analysis of experimental data and present information in an appropriate form, including word processing, spreadsheet manipulation, and preparation of graphs, line drawings, or photographs. Make use of statistical and scientific computer programs and generate analyses and reviews, and assist in the preparation of written reports for publication.
- Guide others with respect to the safe operation of equipment and proper lab procedures.
- Respond to requests for information, and provide consultation to others regarding the organization and methodology of the program. Provide advice on experimental procedures and techniques to other researchers.
- Creates, monitors and adapts databases for PRAQ to ensure accuracy and efficiency of data collection.
- Assist with the development of resource materials, reports and preparation of presentation materials. May present results on behalf of project teams. Participate at regular team meetings.
- Liaise with external agencies and institutions for the purpose of gathering information related to project activities and to coordinate meetings.
- Perform general administrative duties, such as organization of meetings with key stakeholders and participants; taking minutes, and ordering supplies.
- Plan, manage, orient, and provide work direction to students to assist in the development and completion of their projects.
- Assist in training of residents, students and staff for safe hospital and laboratory procedures and the responsible conduct of research.
- Undertake other duties pertaining to PRAQ’s smooth functioning and in support of the laboratory.
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**:
- University degree in a relevant field with some job-related experience or a three-year post secondary program and several years job-related experience.
- Previous relevant experience in a health research environment is required; experience in clinical research and analysis is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with conduct and completion of clinical trials is considered an asset.
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
