Job Summary
The goal of the laboratory’s research is to give cancer patients more quality time by harnessing the immune system to fight cancer. The lab uses a variety of molecular pathology techniques to study human tumor tissue and investigate the regulation of immune responses to cancer. The goal is to identify tissue-based biomarkers that can be validated in clinical trials and will ultimately allow each patient to get the best available therapy at any stage of disease. The research team will achieve these goals through the fearless pursuit of excellence in a supportive and diverse setting.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Technologist will assist with the ongoing experimental and administrative activities of the laboratory. The incumbent will be highly motivated and eager to learn new techniques. Responsibilities will include coordinating equipment/ reagent acquisition and purchasing, record keeping of grant budgets, specimen tracking, assisting in the development of standard operating procedures for laboratory techniques (including immunohistochemistry [IHC], multiplex immunofluorescence [mIF], in-situ hybridization [ISH], and isolation of DNA and RNA from formalin fixed paraffin embedded [FFPE] tissue) image acquisition using the Vectra Polaris microscope and related lab procedures, as well as maintaining accurate records of experimental methods and results and data-interpretation. Additional responsibilities will include training of new lab members, guiding others in safe use of lab equipment and maintaining regulatory compliance for all lab operations by keeping up-to-date documentation for biohazard/biosafety and ethics mandates. As this position supports research leading to clinical diagnostic tests, the Research Coordinator must clearly understand the importance of quality work as it relates to the impact on patient treatment.
**Job Description**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Requests, tracks, and organizes pathology specimens as required for each project/experiment; the incumbent will need to be familiar with surgical pathology and lab procedures for requesting and cutting specimens.
- Plans and executes experiments to optimize immunohistochemistry staining for markers of interest and build multiplex immunofluorescence panels. This would incorporate evaluating/interpreting test results, utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
- Perform some experimental design and adapt or modify protocols as needed to meet the goals of the research project
- Participates in the development, implementation and record keeping of standard operating procedures and safety protocols under quality assurance guidelines.
- Resolves IHC/ISH staining problems, including reagent preparation, dilutions, expiration dates, and other procedural functions.
- Provides organizational orientation and training specific to the research activities of the laboratory to new research staff and students. Provides support in safe use of lab equipment and procedures such as staining, and scanning tissue slides.
- Co-ordinate a safe and clean work environment. This includes cleanliness and organization of lab workbenches, safe disposal of hazardous waste and providing lab-specific safety training to others.
- Ensures that the lab knowledge is properly documented and prepare periodic reports on workflow, as needed.
- Schedule and conduct lab meetings or team meetings as necessary. Coordinate with undergraduate and graduate students to guide them in their thesis/project work.
- Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures as required for experimental protocols.
- Order reagents and equipment for the lab in accordance with health and safety regulations. This will include organizing, purchasing, keeping track of invoices inventorying and accounting for purchases.
- Assists with the development and administration of laboratory budgets and performs other related administrative and financial duties for the Principal Investigator and research lab.
- Liaises and facilitates communication with internal contacts and external agencies to gather information, coordinate meetings and serve as a contact point for all non-academic/sales inquiries.
- Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate, as well as other required online and in-person trainings and compliance requirements.
