Overview

The Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority (dba Consumer Protection BC) is a not-for-profit organization that administers, through an Administrative Agreement with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, the Business Practices and _Consumer Protection Act_, the _Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act_, the _Motion Picture Act_, the _Ticket Sales Act_ and associated regulations. The purposes of the Authority, per the governing _Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority Act_, are to:

- Deliver consumer protection services throughout British Columbia;
- Promote fairness and understanding in the marketplace; and
- Administer in the public interest any Act delegated to Consumer Protection BC.

Consumer Protection BC operates out of two offices (located in Victoria and Burnaby, BC) and employs 44 employees fulfilling such functions as compliance, enforcement, business practices, licensing, consumer inquiry, data analysis, information and technology, finance, motion picture classification, interest holder relations, government relations, finance, human resources, marketing and communications and public relations. Consumer Protection BC’s most recent audited financial statements (for the period ending December 31, 2023) reported $7.46 million in revenue and $11.09 million in total assets.

**Strategic Direction & Governance**:
Consumer Protection BC’s strategic direction, and specific areas of focus over the next three years, is contained within its 2025 - 2027 Business Plan.

Consumer Protection BC’s Board of Directors is the strategic leader and fiduciary steward for the organization, setting the overall goals and broad general policies. The CEO is held responsible by the Board for achieving goals and the overall management of the organization. The Board of Directors monitors and evaluates the CEO’s progress towards meeting approved goals and compliance with Board policy. The Board focuses on its broad strategic and monitoring roles and is not involved in the day-to-day operations of Consumer Protection BC. The Board of Directors has three standing committees (operating as committees of the whole): the Governance & Nominating Committee, the Human Resources & Compensation Committee and the Finance & Audit Committee.

**Vacant Position**:
Desired Qualifications

There is currently one vacancy on Consumer Protection BC’s Board of Directors. The following qualifications are being sought for the position under consideration:

- ** Knowledge and skills**: advanced marketing, communications, public relations and digital skills;
- ** Experience**: board experience (minimum of three years, including on not-for-profit boards); and
- ** Competencies**: strategic vision, governance focus, and results-orientation and continuous improvement.

- Operating Businesses: advanced experience operating a business as a senior-level executive within a complex organization.

**Eligibility**:
All applicants must be residents of British Columbia and aged 18 or older. The Board’s policy is not to seek direct interest holder representation. ***Term**:
The term of office of a Director, other than the Board Chair, is three years. A Director may not serve for more than six consecutive years unless the additional service is as the Chair.

**Time Commitment**:
The Board of Directors and its Committees usually meet in-person in Victoria, BC, five times a year for two days each (typically in March, June, July, September and November/December). There may be times that, due to urgent or extenuating circumstances, Directors may be asked to attend ad hoc meetings by videoconference that typically last fewer than one hour in length. Directors are expected to allocate appropriate amounts of time to review materials in advance of meetings, in addition to completing any required action items.
