**Primary function**:
Oversee the administration of legal aid services (criminal) at OCJT and TRBC in close collaboration with other Toronto Managers of Legal Services

Home Location: Ontario Court of Justice - 10 Armory Street, Toronto, Ontario
Secondary and Tertiary Location(s): Toronto Regional Bail Centre, Toronto South Detention Centre and any place duty counsel services are provided in Toronto

Reports to: Director General - Toronto District

**Key accountabilities**:

- Inspire, motivate and mentor staff to ensure that clients are receiving high quality legal services in an effective and efficient manner
- Manage staff, ensuring effective staff hiring, development, deployment and performance management
- Implement new and existing LAO initiatives including changes to duty counsel services, Service Integration, LAO Vulnerable Client Strategies, etc.
- Work collaboratively with district and regional colleagues to ensure client service is provided effectively at all Toronto locations where criminal duty counsel services are provided
- Act as liaison between LAO, the Judiciary, the Ministry of the Attorney General and the private bar
- Support the Director General to effectively implement Roster Management in the District
- Work collaboratively with other LAO departments as well as external stakeholders to address any issues or concerns that may impact client service
- Manage Toronto WASH court - must be available to work as WASH court manager at least one weekend per month
- Work in person at OCJT and TRBC as needed
- Manage Institutional Duty Counsel at TSDC and any other institutions where Toronto DC are employed
- Manage departmental budget
- Contribute to the development of strategic/ business plans
- Support employee engagement; Occupational Health and Safety; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; and other corporate initiatives
- Other duties as required.

**Required skills & experience**:

- Law degree and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Demonstrated experience in the area of criminal law, including ethical and practice management issues
- Strong leadership skill coupled with demonstrated commitment to client service
- Proven experience as an effective people manager
- Proven experience in managing financial and administrative functions and in directing and developing both professional and administrative staff
- Strong consultation, facilitation, mediation, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
- Experience in leading or managing change
- Analytical and strategic thinking skills
- Creative problem solving abilities
- Knowledge of the LASA 2020 and Rules & Regulations and an appreciation and understanding for LAO’s service model.
- French language skills are an asset
- Experience managing in a unionized environment is an asset-
