Job Summary
The Construction Safety Officer will report directly to the Safety Manager (David Kun) and will work in partnership with our Site Superintendents and General Superintendent. This role will play a critical role in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.
**Responsibilities**:
Health & Safety Program Implementation and Communication:
Ensure the effective implementation of all components of the Lark Projects Ltd. Occupational Health & Safety Program that are relevant to the worksite.
Post all Lark Projects Ltd. Safety Bulletins, WorkSafeBC Inspection Reports, and safety rules as required for clear communication with all workers on-site.
Hazard Management and Reporting:
Conduct and document Site Safety Orientations to familiarize new employees with site-specific safety requirements.
Record and promptly report all safety hazards to the Site Superintendent or General Superintendent. Ensure that hazards are controlled or eliminated in a timely manner.
Contractor Oversight and Safety:
Record the name and phone number of each contractor's onsite safety representative.
Review and assess each contractor's Occupational Health & Safety Program. Ensure the inclusion of appropriate Safe Work Procedures and rectify any conflicts with Lark Projects Health and Safety Program to mitigate added risks.
Site Safety Inspections and Enforcement:
Conduct formal documented Daily Site Safety Inspections at least twice a day, in addition to continuous informal site safety inspections to promptly identify safety infractions and hazards, and ensure corrective actions are taken.
Maintain a daily count of workers on-site, provided by the contractor's onsite foreman/supervisor, to facilitate effective evacuation procedures.
Record safety infractions and assist the superintendent in enforcing the Lark Projects Ltd. Disciplinary Action Procedures.
Safety Documentation and Meetings:
Ensure that weekly toolbox talks are conducted, documented, and submitted by each contractor. Review the content to ensure it aligns with the tasks being conducted.
Ensure that a daily Field Level Hazard Assessment (FLHD) is completed and submitted by each contractor before commencing tasks with a risk of injury. Review the content to ensure relevance to the specific tasks.
Convey upcoming site safety issues, conflicts, and hazards during weekly trade meetings. Conduct a monthly safety meeting with a safety representative of each contractor, recording minutes and communicating relevant matters to on-site workers.
Accident and Incident Investigations:
Assist the Site Superintendent in accident, incident, and near-miss investigations, analysis, and preparation of reports and summaries.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Training:
Maintain current SDS for all hazardous substances on-site. Ensure contractors submit SDS copies for products brought on-site, along with a WHMIS Controlled Products Inventory.
Obtain and retain copies of training certifications for tasks requiring outside or third-party certification (e.g., First Aid, Man lift, Telehandler, etc.).
Fall Protection:
Other tasks as required include (but are not limited to) light carpentry work like guardrails, etc. along with performing traffic control to assist site progress.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a CSO, Safety Officer, related experience, or laborer looking to transition with knowledge of Health and Safety basics.
Ability to lift more than 50 pounds is a must.
Class 5 drivers license is a must.
OFA ticket Level 2 is a must while OFA ticket Level 3 will be preferred.
In-depth knowledge of construction safety regulations, standards, and best practices is preferred.
Previous equipment experience with a Bobcat, Telehandler, and Forklift is a plus.
Strong communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
