**the program**

EMCN's Rainbow Refuge Program provides support and assistance to LGBTQ+ newcomers, including refugees and immigrants, in their journey to integrate into Canadian society. This program focuses on addressing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, such as isolation, discrimination, and lack of access to inclusive services. The Rainbow Refuge Program offers a safe and welcoming environment where people can find guidance, community connections, and tailored resources to navigate housing, employment, healthcare, mental wellbeing, and legal and social systems. With a compassionate and knowledgeable team, the program strives to empower LGBTQ+ newcomers to live authentically, fostering a sense of being, becoming and belonging as they build a new life in Canada.

**the challenge**

Provide essential community, group and individual support, information and resources to LGBTQ+ newcomers, refugees and immigrants encountering emerging or ongoing complex life situations that challenge or impede their settling in society and community. The complexities unique to this community include limited access to ethnocultural communities for support, fear of sharing personal information, concerns for their safety in public spaces and workplaces, discrimination and harassment.

**the opportunity**
- Provide holistic information, supportive referrals, or advocacy services for LGBTQ+ newcomers refugees and immigrants and assist in areas of food security, housing, healthcare, immigration issues, family violence, legal issues, government forms, etc.
- Make supported referrals to agencies, programs or services internal and external of EMCN, including providing support to referral appointments when needed
- Participate in outreach activities, including community events, workshops, appearances, and other communication opportunities
- Nurture new and old relationships with collaborative partners
- Preparing accurate records and reports in compliance with internal and external reporting requirements and activities
- Assist in the organization of special events with community partners
- Advocate, encourage participation and provide guidance and focus for the LGBTQ+ newcomers group discussions
- Liaise between the LGBTQ+ newcomers group participants and EMCN Team members
- Welcome and orientate new members to the group and ensuring individual and group needs and rights are safeguarded and nurtured
- Provide community/group supports and personalized one-on-one services as needed
- Maintain strict confidentiality of participants, ensure informed consent, stay informed about local resources.

**what it takes**

While all backgrounds will be considered, the most helpful history will include 3 years experience working with LGBTQ+ newcomers and refugee community, deep knowledge of refugee and immigrants needs, familiarity with LGBTQ+ newcomer challenges and issues associated with resettlement / settlement, lived experience is preferred, and a formal education in Social Sciences, Human or Services, Community Development or a related field.

- Comprehensive knowledge about community resources, tools and services that meet the settlement needs of refugees/immigrants with complex circumstances, specific challenges and barriers faced by LGBTQ+ newcomers and how these challenges impact access to housing, employment, healthcare, and of the Canadian, Alberta, and local economic, social and legal systems
- Engaging and inclusive group facilitation skills that lead to meaningful discussions with a welcoming and unbiased approach with complex and sensitive topics
- Network, liaison and champion in and with community, community partners and stakeholder and establish long term, supportive and inclusive working relationships
- Demonstrated intercultural cultural awareness and sensitivity and understands/ adheres to professional code of ethics and abides by FOIP and PIPAed regulations, legislation and company policies
- Highly driven and results-oriented collaborator with strong interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude
- Confident user of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint), Zoom and MS Teams, and adept at learning and working with new technology and software
- Fluency in several languages, including English, is an asset.
