**SUMMARY**:
The BC Neuroimmunology Laboratory is a clinical laboratory focused on providing state of the art diagnostic tools for neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative disorders to improve outcomes for patients with these severe and potentially fatal diseases. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for managing routine laboratory maintenance tasks and development and validation of new state-of the art assays. The Laboratory Technician will interact with all laboratory personnel, including the Quality team, other technicians, students and volunteers.

Due to the nature of the testing required, the Laboratory Technician may be required to work various shifts including days, nights, weekends or holidays, and on call. **Schedule flexibility with and without advanced notice is required.**

**ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Performing routine laboratory duties, such as mammalian cell line culturing, plasmid preparation and propagation, and maintaining lab equipment.
- Performing diagnostic tests on and maintaining specialized lab equipment.
- Completing all parts of related diagnostic testing workflow tasks, such as, though not limited to, sample receiving, accessioning, assay set up, resulting, and billing.
- The development and validation of new state-of the art assays to diagnose various autoimmune neurological diseases and neurodegenerative disorders.
- May involve in verifying the performance characteristics of commercial kits and investigating the utility of these kits in comparison to similar tests and in-house-developed assays.
- Writing standard operating procedures (SOPs), reports, and other documents as necessary
- Compiling data for all necessary scientific and validation reports.
- Attending training and seminars on relevant research as well as new instruments and equipment.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

**REQUIREMENTS**:

- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with at least 2 years of relevant experience, or MSc preferred
- Experience with cell culture and immunofluorescence assays desired
- Experience in a clinical laboratory, especially in immunology is highly preferred

**SKILLS**:

- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Strong computer skills (MS Office including Word, Excel)
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Strong written/verbal communication skills
- Able to operate independently with mínimal direction
- Flexible and adaptable to take on additional tasks as required

**COMPETENCE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTED OUTPUTS**:

- Demonstrates general knowledge and skills related to the scientific and technical components of laboratory testing
- Adheres to policies and principles regarding use and storage of laboratory reagents and supplies
- Adheres to policies and procedures regarding the use, maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment
- Performs steps in the pre-examination, examination and post-examination phases of testing on time and with mínimal errors
- Complies with regulations and guidelines governing laboratory testing
- Works safety in the physical environment of the laboratory and adheres to all Laboratory Safety programs and requirements

- Performance in this role requires participation in and compliance with the BCNI Quality Management System. Specific QMS-related duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Quality Manager and the Laboratory Director. These responsibilities will form part of the Employee’s regular duties as part of their employment at BCNI.
