**JOB PURPOSE**
The Community Builder works within United Ways Hi Neighbour initiative, which centers around place-based resident leadership. The Community Builder is responsible for the implementation of outreach strategies to develop opportunities for relationship building and resident engagement, in line with United Ways goals.
The Community Impact & Investment teamwork in neighborhoods across the United Way British Columbia regions, where we support social connectedness, mutual aid, relationship building and participation. Our community engagement staff work hard to build relationships with community members, and build capacity in facilitation, social equity, empowerment, and asset-based community development.
Together, we believe our model can help build safe, caring, and connected communities.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
**1. Key Responsibilities: Community Development**
- Implements pre-determined outreach strategies to develop opportunities for relationship building and resident engagement between neighbours, United Way, businesses, and community groups
- Implements pre-determined outreach strategies to identify and secure volunteers and organizers
- Increases and promoted United Way presence and visibility in the community using online and digital tools
- Supports the matching of volunteer opportunities in community
- Promote United Way’s Local Love Fund microgrants to residents
- Refines and generates ideas with residents for community projects
- Provides on the ground intelligence and services as a brand ambassador, working as the neighbourhood face of United Way
- Builds a volunteer pool to implement neighborhood strategy
- Increases United Way’s profile in communities through targeted Local Love activities
- Provides support to volunteers and community organizers
**2. Key Responsibilities: Support to Communities**
- Builds both internal and external relationships to recruit volunteers
- Fosters relationships with residents and key stakeholders
**General**
- May participate in community engagement or fundraising activities
- Performs other duties related to the qualifications and requirements of the job
**QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS**
**Education**:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
**Experience**:
- Lives in the identified neighbourhood and has proven experience engaging other community residents to mobilize around community issues
- One (1) year experience working with volunteers and/or community residents
- Has started or been a part of new community initiatives
- Previous experience in successful community engagement projects
**Skills**:
- Knowledge and practice of community development, resident engagement, and facilitation
- Strong leadership skills and detail-oriented
- Solid organizational, analytical, reporting and time management skills with the ability to understand and communicate the broader implications of plans and activities
- Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to leverage relationships in community
- Ability to motivate others and work as a team member. Proven experience in working alongside community volunteers in a supportive partnership
- Ability to create and maintain good working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
- Effective verbal communication skills; an effective listener
- Demonstrated ability to work within a community setting with diverse populations, including community groups, government, professional staff and volunteer
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- You must live in the community or neighborhood that you are working in
- Must be able to get around the neighbourhood or community with ease - and by bike, walking, transit, or car, you can help move tables and deliver stickers for events
- Must have the full capacity to work remotely in your own home to connect virtually for meetings, laptop work, and meeting with residents without a formal office
- Demands on work time will exist outside normal business hours. You have a flexible schedule which allows you to work evenings, weekends, and whenever works best for the neighbours and the community
