Old Strathcona Farmers' Market (OSFM)

Edmonton, AB

Full-time, Permanent

Are you ready to take the reins and steer the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market into an exciting new era? Picture yourself as a pivotal player in the transformation of Edmonton's legendary year-round farmers' market into a dynamic, multi-day community hub. Located in the heart of the arts and festival district on Whyte Ave, you'll find yourself in the epicenter of it all, forging connections with local entities, businesses, and government representatives to bring this vision to life. Join us in redefining this market, that has been a Saturday tradition for four decades, and become a catalyst for change as we explore a reimagined space that nurtures the essence of a lively farmers' market. If you're passionate about farmers' markets, relish the challenge of revitalization, and thrive on building relationships, we want you to be our Farmers' Market Manager. Your journey with us promises a multitude of exciting opportunities and a chance to leave your mark on a thriving market community. Are you ready to be a part of something extraordinary? Let's make history

The Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market Society (OSFMS) is looking for a passionate Farmers’ Market Manager to support the operations of the Market and the OSFMS Board of Directors. This position involves ensuring the day-to-day operations and tasks of the Market are conducted in a professional manner.

Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market is Edmonton’s original indoor farmers’ market and its biggest year-round farmers’ market. The Market features almost 140 vendors selling only the freshest locally grown food (truly farm-to-table) and hand-made artisan goods. The produce attracts many of Edmonton’s best chefs and its amazing vibe and artisans bring in tourists from all over the world. Located one block off historic Whyte Avenue in the heart of a thriving arts’ and festival community, it’s been operating every Saturday for 40 years.

Working for the Market means not only traditional Market days, but also activities aligned with the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market Society. The Society is moving towards a philanthropic model that includes a bursary program and greater community engagement. The position will be crucial in activating a multi-day General Store, Market Café as well as event and meeting spaces. All of this is part of the Market’s major revitalization into a community hub. Involvement in the Society includes working with the broader community around the Market, including forging partnerships with the business community and non-profit groups - promoting it as an inclusive and compassionate space.

About the Role
- Interest and passion for farmers’ markets as a direct marketing tool;
- Working on the extensive physical revitalization of the Market building, including development of timelines for designer and construction contractors.
- Use of excellent conflict resolution skills;
- Develop and grow partnerships with non-profit organizations whose values and goals align with those of the Market;
- Develop strong links to Whyte Avenue district businesses in aligning common goals;
- Continual relationship building and communication with new and existing vendors, Board, inspectors and others;
- Ensure accessibility to vendors and customers during Market days;
- Maintain strong relationships with vendors to address concerns and gain input;
- Develop and enforce Market rules with the Board and vendors to ensure efficient processes are in place, reviewed and updated annually;
- Ensure day-to-day consistent and a fair interpretation of the market rules for vendors and others;
- Actively recruit vendors and work with the Board to select new vendors for the market;
- Mediate disputes between vendors or between vendors and customers;
- Work with the Board, attending all meetings and providing operations report;
- Develop and implement an emergency readiness plan;
- Ensure knowledge of legislation and regulations, which impact vendors and the market;
- Ensure regulatory compliance through local bylaws and provincial legislation;
- Work with the local public health authority and other inspectors to ensure regulatory issues are addressed within the market and the vendors;
- Maintain the facility and identify any maintenance requirements;
- Complete annual budget and work within that budget;
- Maintain complete and accurate records including processing bills incurred by the market;
- Complete required Alberta Agriculture paperwork annually (including provincial requirements for the Market Manager) and ensure vendors have completed their farmers’ market home study food safety course;
