We have an ongoing need for **Casual/On-call Health Care Assistants (HCA)** for our Coquitlam location.
**Key Activity Summary**
- Ensures a safe, homelike environment for the residents and their families at all times;
- Respects and promotes the dignity, choices, and individuality of each resident by recognizing them as a whole individual with unique cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial needs;
- Assists residents and their families during admission by orienting them to the residential facility and introducing them to other residents and staff members. Ensures residents’ belongings are properly labeled;
- Assists residents and families during transfers and/or discharges by packing residents’ belongings;
- Encourages, facilitates, and supports residents to participate in their personal care and activities of daily living (ADL);
- Provides all physical aspects of personal care for an assigned group of residents, employing a resident-focused care philosophy and utilizing the principle of maximal resident independence;
- Participates and assists in the delivery of social, recreational, and therapeutical programming and activities under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator; participates in the delivery of walking programs (in the absence of the Rehab Assistant) developed by the Occupational Therapist;
- Observes, records, and reports residents ongoing; reports concerns or changes in residents’ condition to the Nurse on duty;
- Uses medical equipment safely, in accordance with established safety policies, standards and procedures. Immediately reports any malfunctioning equipment to the Program Manager or Nurse on duty;
- Assists residents with meals by serving and collecting meal trays and feeding designated residents, maintaining intake and output records as required;
- Attends in-service educations to update knowledge and skills, and to be informed and updated on new procedures relevant to nursing care;
- Maintains a safe environment for all residents, families of residents, and staff members by adhering to established facility and company safety policies, standards and procedures including emergency procedures and infection control measures and guidelines. Immediately reports any unsafe conditions to the Program Manager or Nurse on duty;
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Program Manager and/or Nurse on duty.
**Education, Knowledge and Skill Requirements**
- Registered with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry
- Completion of a recognized Health Care Assistant Program or its equivalent
- First Aid & CPR Level C with AED certification
- Current Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification
- Food Safe Level 1
- Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum (PVPC)
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbally and in writing)
- Ability to prioritize and organize work
- Ability to safely operate related equipment
- Ability to work in teams collaboratively and communicate with others in a respectful manner
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
**Physical Demands**
The Health Care Assistant position requires a significant amount of walking, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing, and sitting. In an average day, the worker typically spends approximately 6 hours standing or walking, lifts a maximum of 50lbs, and frequent lifting and/or carrying. Workers must be able to manage stressful work situations with dexterity.
- Please note that as a result of the Single Site Order (SSO), the current hourly rates are temporary and are in place indefinitely until further directions from the Ministry of Health._
