The B.C. General Employees’ Union requires a staff representative (**researcher**) to work in the BCGEU Learning and OHS department, effective date to be determined. The position is located at BCGEU headquarters in Burnaby.

This position reports to the Director, Learning and OHS.

**DUTIES**:

- **Public policy research**: analyze government policies, programs, legislation, actions and initiatives relevant to the union, its membership and the broader public
- **Activist research**: adopting a social movement unionism and/or progressive political economy frame of reference, conduct strategic research and analysis to advance the interests and priorities of the BCGEU, its membership, the broader labour movement, and other progressive social movements as identified by senior union leadership
- **Union research**: assist other departments across the union with public policy, financial, economic and other research; submit FOI requests, conduct surveys/questionnaires/polling and other research and analysis
- **Reports, presentations, and submissions**:prepare and present briefs, policy statements, reports, public submissions and other research-related communications or information
- **Lobbying activities**: track and report lobbying activities carried out by the union's senior leadership
- **Committee assignments**: support elected officers on BCGEU committees; represent the union on external committees and working groups, or in meetings with government, public officials and employer representatives
- **Liaison**: work with BCGEU activists, community groups, unions and other labour organizations on public policy issues
- **Other duties**: the primary role in this position is research; however, a researcher may be assigned associated work, as required, to support departmental objectives

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- university degree in economics, public policy or related field, preferably a graduate degree
- experience conducting public policy, corporate and sectoral research, including labour market analysis
- familiarity with government budget documents and the provincial public finance cycle
- experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis
- strong practical knowledge of Microsoft Excel; familiarity with statistical software is preferred (e.g., STATA, SPSS, SAS, etc.)
- excellent written and verbal communications skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate complex economic and policy issues in simple, understandable terms
- experience preparing and presenting briefs to government and at public hearings
- involvement in activist research, including experience in union campaigns, community organizing, or political campaigns
- demonstrated ability to develop activists' skills and to maintain effective working relationships with union and community activists as well as coalition partners
- an understanding of the goals and values of the labour movement

Travel is required; therefore, applicants must hold a valid B.C. Driver's license. As part of your terms of employment, you will be required to have an approved, union-made, non-luxury vehicle upon successful completion of the six-month probationary period.
