**Position**: Director of Care **Reports to the Executive Director**:
Director of Care **Hours of Work**: Monday through Friday
- Flexibility is required
- Weekend and after hours oversight as needed
- Must be prepared to assist in Special events as needed i.e. Resident Council Events, Family Council events, Staff and Volunteer Appreciation Events.
- Must be available to cover in the absence of the Executive Director.

Under the direction of the Executive Director and the Policies and Procedures of the Home, the DOC manages the planning, organizing and evaluation of the delivery of care and services to residents. The DOC directs the nursing and personal care staff in the provision of nursing care and services to residents according to their identified needs. The DOC works collaboratively with all disciplines to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of each resident; ensuring all resident specific needs are provided safely, documented clearly and communicated to all health disciplines. The DOC is accountable for all aspects of care and services. The DOC ensures that the Quality Inspection Program expectations of clinical services and policies and procedures of Sharon Village Care Homes are complied with and applied consistently throughout the Home.

**General Summary of Duties**

The Director of Care is responsible to the Executive Director for managing the coordination of activities necessary to ensure the nursing department is operating in compliance with MOLTC Regulations and Sharon Village Care Homes policies and procedures and all other regulatory bodies. The DOC is responsible for the recruitment, orientation, and evaluation of nursing staff; the development and interpretation of departmental policies and procedures; the provision of direction to staff regarding planning and organizing resident care; the promotion of principles of activation throughout the home; the implementation & maintenance of a staff development program; and the coordination of nursing quality assurance, Quality Improvement and Risk Management activities and other related nursing duties.

**Knowledge**

As per the Regs:
(3) The licensee shall ensure that everyone hired as a Director of Nursing and Personal Care,

(a) has at least one year of experience working as a registered nurse in the long-term care sector;
(b) has at least three years of experience working as a registered nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting; and

(c) has demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
- Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario, in good standing.
- Must have at least 3 years recent working experience within a Long Term Care Facility.
- Must have knowledge and able to research Best Practice Guidelines and to communicate and teach to the Health Team.
- Must be able to interpret and communicate to others the College of Nurses Standards of Practice.
- Must be able to deal with unusual situations; set priorities; deal with stress and time pressures.
- Must follow guidelines, policies, and procedures established by the facility, CNO Standards of Practice.
- Must have knowledge of OH&S legislation and be able to provide supervision and direction to staff in ensuring safety to residents, self and other co-workers.
- Must have knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control policies and practices and be able to communicate these to residents, family, and staff
