**VISD-2005** **-**501**:Contemporary Design Theories & Practice** (**0.5** credit)**

**COURSE DESCRIPTION**:
Design practice is becoming increasingly more interdisciplinary, socially focused and complex. As a result, design as a discipline has needed to initiate new modes of thinking about design which includes adapting methodologies from fields other than design. This course explores a broad range of contemporary design practices such as industrial design, environmental design and material art & design within this framework. Students will read contemporary texts written by or about designers and design theorists, analyze exemplary contemporary design practices through case studies and be encouraged to view design in an expanded field of related disciplines and practices.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/reviews; including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience
- Experience teaching at the post secondary level is considered an asset, equivalent relevant experience will be considered
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty
