HAD 5773 - Introduction to Theories of Organizational Behaviour & Applications to the Health Care Sector

Course Description:

This is a survey course intended to introduce Health Services Research Program students to contemporary theories, frameworks, and concepts of relevance to studying “organizational behaviour” at the individual (micro-), group (meso-) and organizational/system (macro-) levels in health care settings. Organizations are one of the key social contexts in which people engage throughout much of their adult lives. Organizations are important in bringing together resources to achieve desired goals and outcomes, producing goods and services efficiently and effectively, facilitating innovation, applying technologies to produce outputs, adapting to and shaping their external environments, and creating value for consumers. Individual workers, including their performance, attitudes, health and wellbeing, are profoundly influenced by the organizations in which they work. Work settings comprise other workers, supervisors, and organizational phenomena including work culture, climate, perceived supervisor support, and organizational support. In health care, the organizations in which people work are also influenced by other organizations including those that provide vital human resources, funders, and overseers. This course introduces dominant theories and concepts in the discipline of organizational behaviour - which is in turn informed by the disciplines of cognitive psychology, social psychology, sociology, anthropology, and management.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

Distinguish amongst theories, frameworks and concepts in the field of organizational behavior that are relevant to conducting health services research at the micro-, meso- and macro- levels of analysis. Adeptly apply one or more of theory(ies) or framework(s) to the development of a paper/proposal (generally excluding a fully developed methods section) that addresses a research question(s) and motivates a series of related propositions or hypotheses.

Course Details:

Class schedule: Thurs 10-Noon

Estimated enrolment: 10

Estimated TA support: based on enrolment - None

Qualifications:

A Doctorate level education in organizational behaviour or a related discipline (e.g., health services research), preferably with research and/or practical application of relevant theories and concepts to a health care setting(s); A robust understanding of the dominant theories and concepts of relevance to micro-, meso- and macro-organizational behaviour; Past teaching, research assistance, and/or mentorship experience preferred, preferably at the graduate level; Prior experience in adult teaching-learning methods; Comfortable with electronic teaching tools such as Learning Management Systems (e.g., Quercus), PowerPoint, as well as on-line collaboration tools (Webinars, Video-conferencing).
