Truro, Canada MacLean Family Full time

**JOB: Disability Support Worker in Family Home**

Looking to a hire disability support worker to support a young woman. Anne is funny, stubborn, musical, loving, determined and active in the wider community. She thrives with boundaries and clear expectations. She lives a low-key life with a fun loving, family in Truro, NS.

We are different than a group home because we are a family and you will become part of our wider family if hired. We don’t have a client-staff relationship where you are “in charge” and have a professional distance from Anne. We believe that being in relationship means both people are transformed and your job is to support Anne in living her best life. The most important thing for us is your personality and your willingness to learn. Ideally you are fun (and can be silly), compassionate but can be firm, self motivated and detail oriented. There is a lot you can learn on the job but having experience working with people with disabilities is important.

This position includes supporting Anne with relationship building, community engagement, implementing behaviour management programs, accompanying her to activities (including attending Special Olympics), personal care, meal preparation, and household chores. You can bring lots of your own personality and passions to the position. She has autism, Celiac disease and a serious seizure condition (although does not have seizures too often) so experience in these areas is an asset. **Please fill out the questions that accompany this job description and attach your resume when you apply.**

**You will have a regular working schedule and it is our hope that training will start the first week of August, with regular shifts beginning mid-August.**

**Skills**:

- Experience working with people with Intellectual Disabilities or autism,
- Ability to work well under pressure with medical emergencies,
- Reliable, creative and self motivated,
- Attention to details,
- Drivers license and reliable car (This is required as she needs to be transported to activities),
- Able to follow instructions,
- Ability to be authoritative and supportive.

**Desirable (but not necessary) Assets include**: Experience with seizure disorders, Med Awareness Certificate, food handlers safety, First Aid & CPR, Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), experience with Celiac disease.

**Hours**:15-25 per week
- Casual Hours including days (up to 12 hours) and weekends.
- Regular Schedule which is shared with other support staff is:

- 9 AM - 9 PM Monday, Tuesday, Friday,
- 8 AM - 9 PM Wednesday,
- 9 AM - 2 PM Saturday,
- 9 AM - 5 PM Thursday & Sunday.
- Occasionally round clock respite care is required as well.
- **Remuneration**: $18.00-$20.00 Hourly Salary - there are no deductibles or benefits as this is a contact position and falls under contract rules. Successful Applicants file their taxes as self-employed.
- If you are a successful applicant, you will be asked to provide:

- Driver's validity licence check
- Criminal record check (vulnerable Sector Search)-originals

**Please answer the questions and then send a resume and a cover letter.**

QUESTIONS to be answered:
Please tell us about your experience working with people with disabilities.

The number of hours you are scheduled, will depend on your relationship with the young woman you are supporting. As her comfort grows, your hours can expand, but it might take a little while. Are you OK with this?

The nature of this job means that you sometimes have to deal with vomit and feces, including cleaning it up and doing laundry. I understand for some, this is a deal breaker. Is this something that will be a problem for you?

This job includes shifts that mostly range from 5-8 hours, however occasionally there are 12 hour and overnight shifts. **Availability and flexibility is important. **Although there will be a regular rotational schedule, support staff fill in for each other when time off is required. as the schedule will not always be the same, but will be booked month by month. Understanding this, when would you be available to start?
