Emergency Support Worker

**Job Summary**
As a member of the integrated services team, the Emergency Response Centre Support Worker facilitates the operation of an emergency shelter program including accepting referrals based on predetermined criteria, intake and orienting guests, providing support that meets the needs of guests entering the program including but not limited to the provision of food, clothing, and support toward the resolutions of issues that have rendered them homeless. The Emergency Response Centre Support Worker deals with the public, other service agencies and professionals involved in the support of the guests.
**Organizational Status**
The Phoenix Society is a multi-service agency located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia dedicated to providing accessible services and opportunities to people who face barriers related to addiction, mental health, housing, education, criminal justice involvement and/or employment. The Harm Reduction Worker provides information, support and referrals related to safer substance use, including harm reduction supplies, and/or information to mitigate risks related to substance use.
**Work Performed**
**Client Services**
- Performs guest intake based on established criteria; distributes harm reduction supplies and Naloxon Kits and informing guests of the resources available to them
- Performs duties related to medication administration including but not limited to documentation, witnessing and distribution
- Provides assistance such as identifying and sharing information on a variety of community/government resources including services providing: housing, meals, health, treatment, legal and financial needs
- Follows up on immediate guest crisis by performing duties such notifying emergency services, identifying support and service agencies or groups
- Assists guests with self-care skills (e.g. maintenance of personal hygiene, housekeeping, and appointments)
- Provides first aid and health related information to staff and residents when required
- Ensures harm reduction supplies are accessible to members of the community, despite living circumstances or other factors that limit access to services
- Maintains accurate statistics throughout practice and provide monthly reports
- Provides support to all individuals served in a judgement-free and client-centered approach
- Acts as a back-up to other outreach or support staff as needed
**Operations**
- Observes guests and their environments to ensure safety and the premises are maintained (e.g. by reporting unsafe conditions, incidents and/or behaviours, investigating disturbances, dealing with client emergencies in accordance with guidelines and reporting incidents to appropriate staff or authorities).
- Defuses volatile situations using non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
- Documents observations for communication to other staff
- Monitors guests who may be actively engaged in drug and alcohol use and following overdose prevention protocol
- Assists with meal service and cleaning duties throughout shift
- Follow and implement universal precautions and infection control
- Ensure safe handling of sharps containers and other equipment
- Ensure sharps are disposed of in a safe and correct manner
- Ensure that program regulations, policies and procedures are followed
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of internal fire safety policies and procedures, as well as other emergency procedures
- Organize and assemble monthly administrative reports
- Maintain agency standards of work quality
- Assists in providing orientation to new employees or students by performing duties such as familiarizing individuals with the policies and procedures or equipment of the facility and/or work area and demonstrating work procedures and providing introductions to residents
- Assists in monitoring the movements of residents within the building to ensure that areas are used for the purpose for which they were designed by visiting floors and common areas regularly and documenting in logs
- Sends out daily reports and shift briefings; responsible for accurate case documentation
**Community Relations**
- Attend public and organizational events as required
- Participate in liaison activities with stakeholders and the broader community in a professional manner
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of social, economic, recreational, and educational resources in the community
- Foster teamwork within the Phoenix Society and with service stakeholders. Takes action required to foster teamwork and resolve problems that may arise
**Qualifications**
- Post-secondary diploma (e.g., 2 to 3 years) in social sciences, counselling, social work, community services, etc.
- 1 to 3 years of experience working with marginalized populations, substance use services, mental health, corrections, etc., or equivalent
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening is required
