Green Buildings Specialist

Under the supervision of the Manager, Office of Sustainability, the Green Buildings Specialist is responsible for the planning, development, delivery and integration of a wide range of green building systems, programs and services designed to meet the goals identified in the Winnipeg Climate Action Plan and established community sustainability priorities. Further, the position performs technical work that involves the formulation, implementation and ongoing management of key corporate and community-wide building energy policies, projects and programs that advance long-term sustainability.

The position will advance cross-departmental collaboration and lead change, particularly with respect to greener buildings. This may include piloting new initiatives, improved education and awareness, and building capacity to support the built environment’s transition to a low carbon future.

**As the **_Green Buildings Specialist_**_ _**you will**:

- Participates in major planning initiatives and programs that advance low carbon and energy efficient buildings.
- Works collaboratively with civic and public stakeholders as part of major planning initiatives and programs.
- Provides advice, information and recommendations to Council, Committees of Council, and others regarding policy, legislation and by-law matters.
- Provide support for green building and sustainability initiatives.

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- A University degree in environmental studies/science, natural resource management, sustainability engineering or planning;. Equivalent experience and education may also be considered.
- A Master’s degree in a relevant field, is considered an asset. (Natural Resources Management, Environment, Sustainability)
- Energy Manager Certification considered an asset.
- Certification in Green Buildings (e.g. LEED, BOMA Best, Passive House, etc) would be considered an asset.
- A minimum of twenty-four (24) months experience in planning/implementing environmental sustainability and low carbon initiatives.
- Experience with community engagement.
- Experience working with energy management software such as Portfolio Manager (other related software may be considered)
- Knowledge of green building standards/certifications, construction techniques, innovation, and community/stakeholders.
- Knowledge of economic development issues as related to transitioning to a local carbon economy and sustainable development.
- Knowledge of acts, by-laws, building codes and other legislation as it relates to environmental/sustainability issues.
- Experience performing research, analysis, and synthesizing information for the purpose of writing proposals and reports.
- Experience facilitating sustainability conversations with various stakeholders that have varying and diverse perspectives on sustainability issues to support community engagement (i.e. local business, government, community groups) and advance climate priorities.
- Strong analytical skills to synthesize technical data and make policy recommendations.
- Strong interpersonal skills to encourage collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated high degree of initiative and ability to work with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- General political awareness.
- Experience delivering public presentations and preparing formal reports.
- Understanding of performance measurement, analysis and management tools and systems for monitoring performance of green buildings.
- Demonstrated analytical ability, including the ability to develop a business case and a cost-benefit analysis for various climate action and environmental sustainability projects.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and to be discreet
- Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to plan, organize, and execute several complex and varied tasks.
