**Position: Horticulture Summer Student**
**Reports to: Facilities and Operations Manager**
**Start Date: ASAP**
**Classification: CUPE 900**
**Salary Grade: As per BCWP collective agreement**

**Primary Purpose**
This is a hands-on position responsible for maintaining the health and appearance of park grounds to ensure that the British Columbia Wildlife Park meets the high standards of a provincial scale destination tourist attraction and conservation facility.

**Employee Eligibility**:

- Must be registered as a full time post-secondary student in the previous academic year and returning to school on a full time basis in the next academic year.
- Must be a post-secondary student, but not attending full time classes while participating in their placement at BCWP
- Must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the time of intake
- Must be able to meet the eligibility requirements of the program for which they are approved
- Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License and submit a drivers abstract
- Must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (end of Labour Day weekend)
- Must obtain a RCMP criminal record check
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be a BC resident
- Must not hold another full time summer job

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Working knowledge of native, invasive and ornamental plant species
- Knowledge of non-pesticide alternatives for weed control
- Basic understanding of conservation philosophy
- Must be able to work safely around wildlife
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations
- Thorough knowledge of hazards and safety precautions for work performed
- Good oral and written communication skills, and good interpersonal skills

**Major Responsibilities**
- Under specific direction delivers effective maintenance and enhancement of park grounds while at the same time provides some work direction to volunteers.
- Follow established policies and procedures to control and work towards eradicating invasive species
- Maintain a clean and professional work area
- Maintain and keep tools in good working order
- Carry out procedures to ensure cleanliness of service yards and building
- Maintain positive relationship with park staff and guests
- Communicate in a timely and effective way with department staff
- Provide support for education and interpretation at the park
- Strive to enhance landscaping, maintenance and planning knowledge and skills
- Follow established policies and procedures to ensure safety of animals, public and staff
- Other responsibilities and duties as required

**This is a union position, wage to be determined as per BCWP Collective**
**Agreement. This is based on a 40-hour work week. Weekend work will be part of this position.**
